New Season Of IPL 2025 Set To Ignite Cricket Rivals

With young captains and emerging stars, excitement builds ahead of tournament opener on March 22.

Dubai: The 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is about to get underway on Saturday, March 22, 2025, promising a thrilling season filled with new talent and strategies. This year, with franchises opting for younger captains—except for defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders—the world’s richest T20 league is set to showcase a fresh wave of players eager to make their mark.

The season kicks off at Eden Gardens, where the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will face the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in what is expected to be a riveting opener. Over the course of 65 days, cricket fans can look forward to 74 matches spread across 13 cities, culminating in the crowning of a new champion.

This season marks a significant turning point for several franchises, especially teams like RCB, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Lucknow Super Giants, all of whom are in the hunt for their first IPL title. Meanwhile, the Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings—who have both won five IPL titles—are eager to reclaim their former glory after disappointing seasons last year.

Among the promising stars is Shubman Gill, who was the standout performer in IPL 2023, scoring an impressive 890 runs. Gill has transitioned to a leading role, particularly after successfully captaining Gujarat Titans, and he aims to carry that momentum into this season. "I have had more experience captaining Gujarat than the Indian cricket team. Last year was my first year as captain, so there were a lot of things I could learn from," he said.

With Virat Kohli also aiming to extend his dominance, the pressure will be on him as he chases his first IPL trophy with RCB. Kohli has previously had a stellar track record and won the Orange Cap last season. He expressed hopes for a successful run this season, particularly with his jersey number 18 serving as a symbolic touchstone.

While the KKR and RCB go head-to-head, the cricketing community will also have its eyes on the predictions for the playoffs. Notably, former cricketers like Virender Sehwag and Adam Gilchrist have made their top four predictions. Sehwag revealed, "MI, SRH, PBKS & LSG are going to be the top four," while Gilchrist predicted a top-four finish for PBKS, MI, SRH & GT. Controversially, Sehwag is among those who did not back RCB for the playoffs.

The season will see significant rule changes as well. Captains will no longer face bans for slow over rates but will incur fines instead. This change follows last season's penalties that saw captains Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant serving one-match bans. The IPL will also allow the use of saliva to shine the ball, a ban lifted post-pandemic, making it the first major cricket league to permit this practice again.

Fans are eager for this season's spectacle, especially with the introduction of opening ceremonies at all IPL venues, something previously not seen since 2015. This year’s opening ceremony at Eden Gardens will kick off at 6 PM IST, featuring performances that highlight the rich culture of West Bengal, with dignitaries, including Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, expected to attend.

As star players like Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who at 43 will continue to inspire young talents, and newcomers like 13-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who recently earned an IPL contract with Rajasthan Royals, take the field, the excitement will undoubtedly escalate. RCB’s new captain, Rajat Patidar, faces the heavy task of guiding his team to success, particularly as they seek to build upon past seasons.

In conclusion, IPL 2025 is poised to be an electrifying season filled with fresh faces, revamped rules, and fierce competition. As the opening match approaches, cricket enthusiasts around the world will be glued to their screens, eagerly anticipating the moments that will define this season. With every match, every run, and every wicket, a new chapter in the storied history of the IPL will be written.
