Across the country, exciting new dining options are making waves as restaurants expand to new locations, much to the delight of local communities. From innovative buns filled with flavor to beloved pizzas finding renewed life, food lovers can look forward to many culinary experiences.
Xiao Bao Bao, known for its delightful Chinese buns, is set to open its second location at 428 E. 900 S. this June. The original spot near the Main Library in Central City, started by pastry chef Romina Rasmussen and brothers Dwight and Derrick Yee, has been so well-received since its February 2023 soft launch. “We don’t have too much set in stone yet but it’s set to open June-ish,” said the management, hinting at the development phase which includes tenant improvements at the new Milk Block site.
The momentous occasion marks their commitment to sharing the flavors inspired by Dwight and Derrick’s childhood memories and Romina’s experiences during her time spent exploring culinary traditions in China and Taiwan. Customers can expect not only more seating at the new location but also expanded menu offerings.
Meanwhile, moving north to Whitehall, Michigan, another beloved establishment has successfully made the leap to a fresh new domicile. Big John’s Pizza, which boasts to be a staple for locals since the 90s, reopened at 3263 E. Colby Street after temporary closure. Owner Amy Martell exclaimed, “The pizza is still the same…Dining room capacity's like triple from what we had before!”
This move followed the City of Whitehall's acquisition of their previous location to create public park space, necessitating the restaurant's relocation. Despite the uncertainty surrounding its future, the local community’s unwavering support played a significant role in inspiring Martell and her husband Neal to continue their pizza legacy.
The owners listened closely to their loyal customers, and with help from the community, managed to transform the new space, which features greater capacity and ample parking. “We realized there was something real there for those people come in and they’re so thankful, so grateful,” Amy added.
Moving back to Canada, Grandma Loves You, famed for its creative sandwich options, has unveiled another location at 42 Wellington St. E. in Toronto. They are quickly becoming known for their hearty subs packed with delicious flavors reminiscent of home-cooked meals. Popular for their unique offerings, including the viral French hot dogs made with brie cheese and blueberry jam, Grandma Loves You exemplifies how food can create cherished memories.
Offering something for every palate, their menu features cold cut sandwiches, club sandwiches, grilled hot dogs, and more. Grandma Loves You is also known for crafting dishes with love, likened to the intentions of a sweet grandmother. Since its opening on December 31, 2024, its growth and appeal continue to strengthen among sandwich enthusiasts.
Each of these establishments contributes uniquely to their respective communities, not only enhancing food landscapes but also creating spaces where locals can gather and share experiences over meals. Restaurants bring more than just food to the table—they deliver stories, culture, and most significantly, connection.
All three restaurant openings highlight not only the resilience and creativity of local entrepreneurs but also the importance of community support. With each new door opening, the culinary scene grows richer, making neighbors feel at home with every delightful bite.
