The team deployed artificial intelligence combined with drone technology to scour an area encompassing approximately 243 square miles of the Nazca Pampa, part of the UNESCO World Heritage site.

Using drones for archaeological exploration is revolutionary. The drones provided the researchers with detailed visual data from angles not easily accessible by humans. While many of the newly discovered geoglyphs remain faint and ghostly, their outlines become distinct with precise observation. The challenge is exacerbated by the immense scale of the pampa, where finding specific features can often feel like searching for needles in haystacks. Marcus Freitag, an IBM physicist involved with the project, stated, "Finding the needle in the haystack becomes practically impossible without the help of automation." This emphasizes the value of technological advancements, as they can reveal hidden patterns of sociocultural significance.

The latest survey results, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, provide fresh insights. The new geoglyphs, averaging 30 feet across, showcase varying motifs. While about 82% of these new findings depict human or human-modified animal figures, the famously large line-pattern geoglyphs tend to focus on wildlife themes. This discrepancy offers clues about how different communities utilized the geoglyphs—whether for ritualistic purposes or through individual expressions of culture.

One of the standout discoveries among the new geoglyphs includes the representation of what appears to be a large feline with the tail of a fish, alongside more classical designs like spirals, trapezoids, and zigzags. These figures often correspond to ceremonial pathways used by ancient communities, connecting lines to significant sites across the desert's surface.

The Nazca Lines being primarily regarded as monumental art is but one theory surrounding their construction. Historically, they have been considered astronomical calendars, water-cultivator markers, or even as pathways for religious rites.
