New Music Releases Showcase Diverse Sounds This Week

From Maria Somerville to Self Esteem, artists explore new themes and styles in their latest albums.

On April 25, 2025, Nialler9 published a comprehensive rundown of new albums and EPs hitting digital streaming platforms and physical record shops, showcasing a diverse array of sounds and styles from both established and emerging artists.

Among the notable releases is "Luster," the long-awaited second album from Connemara artist Maria Somerville. Known for her ethereal sound, Somerville’s new work delves into a dreamy pop style reminiscent of the best offerings from her label, 4AD. Collaborators on this album include Ian Lynch of Lankum, Henry Earnest, and Róisín Berkeley, among others, with production contributions from J. Colleran and Diego Herrera, also known as Suzanne Kraft.

Another significant release is "A Complicated Woman" by Self Esteem, the project of Rebecca Lucy Taylor. This album, which follows her critically acclaimed "Prioritise Pleasure," is set to embark on a tour in September and October 2025. Critics have noted that while the album amplifies empowering choruses and features a rich tapestry of female voices, it also represents a shift in tone, moving towards a more subdued and somewhat clichéd expression of feminism.

In a review published by Northern Transmissions, the album is described as diluting the Self Esteem brand to "hollow empowerment." The reviewer pointed out that Taylor’s once biting and relatable lyrics have transformed into what feels like bland slogans. Songs like “Focus Is Power” and “If Not Now, It’s Soon” echo the sentiments of her previous work but lack the raw energy that characterized her earlier hits. The review notes, "It’s as if you asked ChatGPT to create a song based on the descriptor ‘moving’; you can hear the moment Taylor and her team want you to puff out your chest, take a deep breath, and decide you’re okay."

Similarly, another review from Hotpress gave "A Complicated Woman" a score of 8/10, praising its exploration of feminine experiences and Taylor’s candid reflections on her rise to fame. The standout track, “If Not Now It’s Soon,” encapsulates her past struggles with hypersexuality and self-destruction, featuring a response from actress Julie Hesmondalgh that adds depth to the narrative.

As Taylor reflects on her journey, the album’s lead single, “Focus Is Power,” is noted for its repeated mantras and lush instrumentals, yet some critics argue it lacks the intrigue of her previous work. The review from The Line of Best Fit highlights memorable tracks such as “Mother” and “69,” which showcase her signature wit and ability to tackle complex themes with humor.

In contrast to Self Esteem’s introspective offerings, the married duo Tennis announced the conclusion of their 15-year indie pop project with their album "Face Down In The Garden." This marks a significant chapter in their musical journey as they bid farewell to a project that has seen them evolve artistically.

Meanwhile, Deerhoof celebrates 31 years as a band with their 19th album, "Noble and Godlike in Ruin," continuing their tradition of innovative and off-kilter rock. The US/Japanese quartet remains a staple in the music scene, known for their eclectic style and relentless creativity.

Adrianne Lenker of Big Thief has also released a live album titled "Live at Revolution Hall," featuring a remarkable 43 tracks from her 2024 Bright Future tour. This album captures the essence of her performances, including fan favorites and unreleased gems, showcasing her powerful vocal presence alongside collaborators Nick Hakim and Josefin Runsteen.

Stockholm-based post-punk band Viagra Boys released their fourth album, "Viagr Aboys," and are set to perform at Dublin's 3Olympia for two dates next week, promising an energetic live show for fans.

Emerging Irish project Cushla debuted with "Tech Duinn," which blends traditional Irish music with contemporary electronic sounds. With vocalist Nell Ní Chróinín at the helm, the album reflects a fusion of genres and is set to be showcased at upcoming festivals such as Focus Wales and Primavera Sound.

Additionally, prolific Irish electronic producer POSER has released his debut mixtape, "Good Time Mixtape," which he describes as a love letter to the diverse influences that have shaped his musical journey. This mixtape includes previously released singles and aims to capture the essence of electronic music in a fresh and engaging way.

Caoimhín Mac Uaid also made a splash with his debut album, "Ríocht Na Sí," which translates to "Land of the Fairies." This album interweaves traditional Irish music with themes of nature-based spirituality and modern electronic production, further enriching the Irish music landscape.

Other notable releases on April 25, 2025, include new works from Big Wett, d4vd, DjRUM, Emma-Jean Thackray, Femi Kuti, Goose, Jensen McRae, Lorenzo Senni, Maria Usbeck, Prima Queen, Rebekka Karijod, Salami Rose Joe Louis, Samia, Sunflower Bean, The Moonlandingz, and William Tyler, showcasing a vibrant week for new music.

As the music scene continues to evolve, these new releases reflect a blend of introspection, empowerment, and creativity, inviting listeners to explore the diverse sounds that define contemporary music.
