Thailand has confirmed its first case of the new Clade 1b strain of Mpox, making it Asia's inaugural report of this potentially dangerous variant. The infected individual, identified as a 66-year-old European man, arrived in Bangkok on August 14 from an unspecified African country.
Symptoms began the very next day, prompting immediate hospitalization. According to Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, director-general of Thailand's Department of Disease Control, the man likely contracted the virus from his travels.
This strain, known for its higher transmissibility and fatality rates, has driven recent outbreaks across Central Africa, particularly impacting countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda. Reports indicate over 500 deaths associated with this intense outbreak since last year.
The World Health Organization has classified Clade 1b as a global health emergency due to its alarming spread and associated risks. While Mpox is not as easily transmissible as respiratory viruses like Covid-19, transmission occurs through close contact, which raises concerns among health officials.
Since confirming the case, Thailand has initiated close monitoring of 43 individuals who had contact with the patient. These individuals will be observed for signs of infection over the next three weeks.
Health authorities are also requesting travelers arriving from 42 countries, deemed high-risk, to undergo testing upon their arrival. This step is part of broader efforts to mitigate the spread of the variant.
Clade 1b was first detected outside Africa just days prior, when Sweden confirmed its inaugural case, involving another individual who had traveled from the continent. This spate of events highlights the increasing geographic reach of Mpox and raises public health alarms.
The increased severity of Clade 1b has been evident, with the fatality rate reportedly standing at around 3.6 percent. Most infections can lead to uncomfortable, flu-like symptoms and skin lesions, but complications can arise, particularly for vulnerable populations.
For comparison, an earlier outbreak involving the Clade 2 variant resulted primarily among LGBTQ populations and led to 140 deaths and nearly 90,000 global cases last year. Despite Clade 2’s milder effects, the fear surrounding Clade 1b is considerable due to its associated risks and rising fatalities.
With widespread cases reported throughout Africa, particularly the DRC and its neighboring nations, health officials are ramping up vaccination efforts. Vaccines are currently scarce, but manufacturers are gearing up to produce millions of doses to bolster defenses against the outbreaks.
Globally, countries are responding by enhancing surveillance measures, ensuring timely testing, and monitoring potential warnings. Singapore and the Philippines, among others, have also reported cases of the milder Clade 2 variant.
While the spread of Clade 1b is worrying, WHO officials stress the importance of public health measures, such as vaccination and education about transmission. Effective tracking of infections and encouraging safe practices can significantly mitigate risk.
