New Indian Air Force Chief Sets Priorities For Combat Readiness

Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh aims to fortify IAF's capabilities amid rising geopolitical tensions

On September 30, 2024, Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh officially took charge as the new Chief of the Indian Air Force (IAF), succeeding his predecessor, Air Chief Marshal Vivek Ram Chaudhari, who retired after three years of service. The change of command took place at the Air Force Headquarters in New Delhi, marking the beginning of ACM Singh's leadership at a pivotal time for the IAF.

Born on October 27, 1964, ACM Singh's military career spans nearly four decades. After being commissioned as a fighter pilot in December 1984, he has held numerous significant roles within the IAF, ranging from command positions to instructional and foreign assignments. Notably, Singh commanded No. 22 Squadron, which operated the MiG-27s, and also led the MiG-29 upgrade project during his tenure as project director at the National Flight Test Centre.

ACM Singh emphasized cohesion and jointness among the forces, which is especially important as the government pushes for theaterization—a strategy aimed at harmonizing operations across the army, navy, and air force. “It is important for the IAF to remain operationally capable, ever vigilant, and credible as a deterrent,” Singh stated, expressing confidence in the warriors of the IAF and urging them to maintain the highest operational standards.

One of Singh's initial statements indicated his intent to prioritize the enhancement of combat capabilities. He highlighted the need for the IAF to modernize its fleet and address procurement challenges, particularly concerning delays related to India's indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mark 1A. Singh, who has logged over 5,000 hours flying time on various aircraft types, is expected to push forward the modernization agenda of the IAF amid changing national security dynamics.

Defense experts view Singh’s appointment as significant, especially considering the current geopolitical climate, which is fraught with tensions, particularly along the eastern Ladakh border with China. His role will involve not only managing existing capabilities but also ensuring the IAF is future-ready.

Singh’s leadership will also include nurturing the 'Sashakt, Saksham, and Atmanirbhar' (strong, capable, and self-reliant) ethos within the IAF. This approach focuses on enhancing indigenous capabilities and reducing dependence on foreign arms supplies. This is particularly timely, as India strives to emerge as a significant player on the global aerospace stage.

During the change of command ceremony, Chaudhari paid homage to brave hearts who served the nation and took time to reflect on the achievements and growth of the IAF during his term. Singh praised his predecessor's contributions and the vision of IAF veterans, attributing the effectiveness of the force to their leadership and strategic foresight.

Singh’s articulated vision is clear—an IAF characterized by operational readiness and adaptability to the ever-evolving security paradigm. He is set to hold the position of Chief of Air Staff until his retirement age of 62, likely until late October 2026, providing him ample time to imprint his leadership philosophy on the Air Force.

Aside from his military commitments, ACM Singh is known for his passion for fitness and enjoys playing squash. He is married to Sarita Singh, and they have two children. This personal aspect adds depth to his character as more than just a military leader but also as someone with diverse interests outside the rigid confines of military duty.

ACM Singh's ascent to the top position of the IAF is viewed as not just administrative but as strategic, intending to steer the Indian Air Force through contemporary challenges with both confidence and innovation.
