New Hand Luggage Rules For Ryanair, EasyJet, And ITA Airways

Travelers must prepare for new sizes and penalties regarding hand luggage starting March 2025.

Starting in March 2025, new regulations regarding hand luggage will go into effect for several airlines including Ryanair, EasyJet, and ITA Airways. Travelers will need to be aware of these changes to avoid unexpected charges at the gate as each airline addresses baggage size and weight more strictly.

For Ryanair, the low-cost Irish airline, the rules around small hand luggage have evolved. Starting next month, passengers can carry a small bag for free, provided it adheres to specific dimensions—40x20x25 cm for a backpack or 25x20x40 cm for a bag or laptop case. However, the airline is introducing stricter penalties for those who do not comply, with fines reaching up to 70 euros for oversized bags at the gate.

Passengers who buy Regular or Flexi Plus tickets will enjoy the added benefit of allowing not only the free small bag but also a larger piece of hand luggage weighing up to 10 kg, with maximum dimensions of 55x40x20 cm which can be stored in the overhead compartment. Additionally, these ticket holders will benefit from a reserved seat and boarding priority. One notable upcoming requirement for Ryanair is that from May 2025, check-in will need to be completed via the Ryanair app, along with obtaining a digital boarding pass. Failure to follow this new protocol will incur an additional airport charge of up to 60 euros, a significant change designed to streamline operations at the airport.

Following Ryanair's lead, EasyJet has set new restrictions for its passengers as well. The airline permits one small bag for free with maximum dimensions of 45x36x20 cm, weighing no more than 15 kg, which must fit under the seat in front of the passenger. For a larger cabin bag (with dimensions up to 56x45x25 cm), passengers must either book this option in advance, be a member of the easyJet Plus program, or book a seat with more legroom or an “Up Front” seat. Like Ryanair, EasyJet will check the dimensions of hand luggage and may charge passengers for bags exceeding limits or for those not pre-booked.

For travelers choosing ITA Airways, the rules permit a maximum hand luggage size of 55x35x25 cm, with a weight limit of 8 kg. Each passenger can also bring an additional accessory, such as a backpack, handbag, or laptop case, with a size limit of 45x36x20 cm. This provision is somewhat more accommodating than the policies of the other two airlines. However, ITA Airways has established that on particularly crowded flights, passengers' hand luggage may need to be checked into the hold, although this policy does not apply to intercontinental flights.

Amid the anticipated changes, it is crucial for passengers to familiarize themselves with these new baggage rules. Airlines are making it clear that adhering to the size and weight limits is essential to avoid incurring costly penalties. Being informed before the travel date is vital to ensure a smooth boarding experience.

These revised regulations reflect a broader trend among airlines to better manage baggage handling processes and minimize costs associated with physical check-in facilities. As airlines prioritize digital check-in, passengers can expect an increase in policies emphasizing the use of mobile applications for check-in and boarding, pushing for more modern travel experiences.

In conclusion, to travel hassle-free and avoid unforeseen expenses, passengers are encouraged to stay informed about their chosen airline's hand luggage policies and ensure proper measurement and weight compliance well before arriving at the airport. With these changes set to take effect soon, preparation can make all the difference in ensuring a pleasant journey.
