On April 8, 2025, NHK announced the latest cast additions for the highly anticipated 2026 Taiga Drama titled "Hideyoshi Kyodai!", featuring Taiga Nakano in the lead role as Hidenaga Toyotomi, the younger brother of the famed warlord Hideyoshi. This series, which marks the 65th installment of the Taiga Drama franchise, promises to deliver a dynamic portrayal of the Warring States period, focusing on the strong bond between the Toyotomi brothers and their monumental achievements in unifying Japan.
The newly revealed cast includes five talented actors: Kaku Sou, Haru Matsumoto, Ryuji Kameda, Nagomi Inoue from the popular idol group Nogizaka46, and Yuka Kosakai. Each of these actors will play pivotal roles that intertwine with the lives of the Toyotomi brothers during a time of great upheaval.
Kaku Sou, who will portray Takatora Todo, is described as one of Hidenaga's most trusted retainers. He is known for his impressive stature and initially served under the Omi daimyo Nagamasa Asai before switching allegiances. Under Hidenaga's mentorship, he learned the importance of both martial prowess and scholarly pursuits, becoming skilled in arithmetic, artillery, and castle construction. Kaku Sou expressed his excitement about the role, stating, "When the manager told me, 'The Taiga Drama has been decided!', I inadvertently struck a guts pose. I never thought I would be able to play Takatora Todo, so I couldn't contain my excitement all day."
Next is Haru Matsumoto, who will take on the role of Mitsunari Ishida, a loyal retainer of Hideyoshi. Born in Omi Province, Ishida was notable for his contributions during key battles, including the Battle of Shizugatake. At just 25 years old, he became one of the Five Commissioners, playing a central role in the administration under Hideyoshi. Reflecting on his casting, Matsumoto remarked, "I thought it was a dream. I had been writing in my notebook every day that I would appear in a Taiga Drama!"
Ryuji Kameda will portray Ryuoki Saito, the grandson of the fierce opponent of Nobunaga, Dosan Saito. Inheriting the leadership of the Saito clan at the tender age of 14 after his father's sudden passing, Ryuoki faced immense challenges in uniting his retainers. Kameda, who previously gained attention for his role as a young Ryoma Sakamoto in the Taiga Drama "Ryomaden," shared his enthusiasm, stating, "I am very happy to have the opportunity to appear in a Taiga Drama since 'Ryomaden.'" He aims to deliver a performance that resonates with viewers.
Joining them is Nagomi Inoue, who will play Chacha, the eldest daughter of the Asai Three Sisters. Chacha's life was marked by turmoil, as she navigated the treacherous waters of familial loyalty and political intrigue. Inoue expressed her surprise and gratitude for the role, saying, "I was very surprised and still can't believe it. I want to put my soul into playing Chacha, who lived fiercely in a turbulent era." This role marks her first appearance in an NHK drama.
Lastly, Yuka Kosakai will take on the role of Matsu, the wise wife of Toshiie Maeda. Matsu is portrayed as a strong and intelligent woman who supported her husband and played a significant role in the political landscape of the time. Kosakai shared her excitement about joining the Taiga Drama, stating, "I felt my heart pounding at the chance to appear in my dream Taiga Drama and want to give my all to the world of 'Hideyoshi Kyodai!' as Matsu."
The drama is set to depict the extraordinary journey of the Toyotomi brothers, showcasing their triumphs and challenges during a period when the future of Japan hung in the balance. The story is told from Hidenaga's perspective, emphasizing his critical role as a supporter of Hideyoshi. The narrative suggests that had Hidenaga lived longer, the fate of the Toyotomi clan might have been vastly different.
In addition to the cast announcements, the show's logo was also unveiled, designed by Sayaka Tanaka from NHK's Imaging Design Department. The logo symbolizes the achievements of the brothers and highlights the importance of the younger brother as a "supporter in the shadows." It incorporates stone wall patterns, representing the hard work and time invested in their accomplishments, and aims to be memorable and relatable to the audience.
"Hideyoshi Kyodai!" is set to air on NHK starting January 2026, and anticipation is building as fans eagerly await the exploration of this pivotal chapter in Japanese history.
