New business openings are taking shape across several communities with the announcements of new locations for local eateries and the introduction of important community services. Lazy Parrot Wings and Brews, known for its vibrant atmosphere and casual dining, will soon open another location near Lake Anna, Virginia. The owner, Kevin Kirby, initially had plans to retire when he moved to Louisa County, but he found the offer for the new location too appealing to decline.
"The food and vibes will be similar to the Pantops location: easygoing, bright colors, and casual eats," Kirby explained. This new venture is set to launch its doors to the public by fall 2025, providing locals with another option for their dining experience.
Meanwhile, another popular establishment, Micky’s Irish Pub, announced it is making its debut at 429 East Third Street, Downtown Davenport, Iowa. Known for its lively atmosphere and beloved by the University of Iowa community, the pub will officially open next month, transitioning from its previous home at Ruby’s Beers, Bikes, and Brats. The decision to move to this revitalized neighborhood follows significant recovery since the flood of 2019.
David Stein, co-owner of Micky's, shared his enthusiasm about their new location. "When we got to see this, we thought, oh, this is it, this is the spot. This neighborhood we want to be in feels just right for us. We feel pretty excited to be down here and to be part of the community, especially seeing where it’s going to be in five years."
The popular pub aims to bring its signature offerings, including its famed cheese fries and the “conglomeration” sandwich, which has been part of the downtown Iowa City menu for over 40 years. Micky's plans to maintain existing volleyball and pickleball courts and will double as a venue for live music concerts on their patio. The addition of guest appearances from Hawkeye athletic and academic alumni will help them strengthen ties to their original Iowa City roots.
On another notable note, Sherwood, Arkansas, recently celebrated the establishment of its first baby box location on Wednesday at the Sherwood Fire Department, located at 400 Lantrip Road. The Safe Haven baby box initiative allows parents to anonymously surrender their infants to the fire department without the fear of legal repercussions, promoting the well-being of vulnerable newborns.
John Sawyer, the Sherwood fire chief, expressed the importance of this initiative, stating, "Once we get the first little one, the excitement of the guys and the women taking care of the child and giving it a chance at life will be immense." The Sherwood baby box is Arkansas’ 26th and part of the nationwide network of 307 similar locations, all aimed at providing safe alternatives for parents.
These new business openings and community initiatives showcase the vibrant spirit and dedication to development within the local areas. The upcoming opening of Lazy Parrot Wings and Brews expands dining options for Louisa County residents, Micky’s Irish Pub anchors itself uniquely within the busy Davenport scene, and the baby box initiative offers meaningful support for families facing difficulties. Communities are not just growing; they are enriching lives through these new opportunities.
