New Allegations Emerge Against Mohamed Al Fayed

The late billionaire faces renewed scrutiny from police as women recount experiences of sexual assault and abuse

Forty new allegations against Mohamed Al Fayed have come to light, prompting police investigations centered around rape and sexual assault claims. The Metropolitan Police, following the release of the controversial BBC documentary Al-Fayed: Predator at Harrods, has increased scrutiny of the late billionaire’s past activities which reportedly span from 1979 to 2013.

The Metropolitan Police stated the new claims related to 40 alleged victims, breaking down to four allegations of rape, 16 of sexual assault, and one concerning trafficking. The police had previously registered 21 separate allegations known to them prior to the documentary airing. This significant uptick in reported incidents signals not just the potential for widespread abuse but also highlights the revelations of previously silenced voices.

Commander Stephen Clayman of the Metropolitan Police commented, "Since the broadcast of the documentary and our recent appeal, detectives have received numerous pieces of information, predominantly relating to the activities of Mohamed Al Fayed but some relating to the actions of others." The authorities are committed to ensuring all reports are formally logged and assessed to determine any allegations of criminality.

Al Fayed, who died at the age of 94 last year, was known as the former owner of Harrods, one of London’s most iconic department stores, and Fulham Football Club. The allegations stem not only from his time at Harrods, but also his operations relating to several businesses, including The Ritz and properties he owned across various locations globally.

Victims have come forward from diverse backgrounds, sharing accounts of their experiences. A BBC investigation revealed testimonies from over 20 former Harrods female employees who alleged they were assaulted or raped during their employment. More than 65 women have since contacted the BBC, alleging varying degrees of sexual misconduct spanning decades.

Among the new allegations, one stems from accounts stating individuals were lured under false pretenses to work for Fayed, only to become victims of his predatory behavior. Alleged incidents reportedly took place not just at Harrods, but at other luxurious residences owned by Al Fayed, including his mansion at 60 Park Lane, commonly referred to as his residence.

Michael Ward, the current managing director of Harrods, expressed regret, noting, "I feel it is important to make it clear I was not aware of his criminality and abuse... Had they been [reported], I would, of course, have acted immediately.” His statement reflects on the toxic culture alleged to have existed within the department store during Al Fayed’s tenure.

The BBC documentary indicated not only systemic failures at Harrods to protect its employees but also alleged misconduct by Fayed dating back to his previous business endeavors and throughout his life. Detailed accounts point to exposures of young female employees to significant power dynamics faced with Fayed, instances where they reportedly "couldn't say no" when called to his office.

Dean Armstrong KC, representing numerous alleged victims, has compared the case to significant historical instances of abuse involving other high-profile figures like Jimmy Savile, Harvey Weinstein, and Jeffrey Epstein, due to the systematic abuse of power and the resultant enabling climate.

Survivors of alleged abuse have formed the "Justice for Harrods Survivors" group, which has seen over 200 reports flood their lines since the documentary aired, with many yearning for justice. The group is currently pursuing legal actions and is committed to bringing attention to the plight of survivors who have been silent for far too long.

This recent development invites broader conversations about the culture of silence around abuse, especially within powerful institutions, and raises important questions about accountability, justice, and the necessity for thorough investigatory practices. With changing tides and societal awareness surrounding the treatment of victims, this case may serve as pivotal for many who have felt incapable of coming forward.

Fulham FC acknowledged the concern this situation presents, stating they are undertaking measures to establish whether any individuals associated with the club have been affected by these troubling allegations. Meanwhile, other organizations affiliated with Al Fayed are being contacted as part of the police's investigative procedures, ensuring all possible survivors have the opportunity to leave their testimonies.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct has also reached out to the Metropolitan Police to assess whether their handling of the allegations needs review, indicating the gravity of the situation and the expectations for just and accountable policing.

Overall, as investigations progress, the impacts of Al Fayed's alleged misconduct continue to unravel, reflecting the deep-seated issues of power abuse within elite circles. The responsive outcry and gritty resilience of survivors stand as testaments to the long-neglected stories of many, with hopes of ensuring such injustices are not overlooked again. Immediate, supportive action from entities as significant as Harrods shows they acknowledge their past responsibilities and the need for comprehensive policies to safeguard both staff and guests from future misconduct.
