Netflix Recovers From Global Outage Affecting Millions

Streaming giant Netflix has successfully resolved a significant technical glitch that impacted millions of customers worldwide on Thursday, April 24, 2025. The outage, which began around 2 PM ET, left many subscribers frustrated as they encountered error codes, were redirected to other profiles, or found their watch lists replaced with those of other users. Reports of these issues flooded social media platforms, with users from major cities like Boston, New York, Chicago, Dallas, and Los Angeles among the most affected, according to Downdetector.

The timing of the outage was particularly unfortunate, as it coincided with the release of the highly anticipated final season of the popular series You, starring Penn Badgley. Fans eager to binge-watch the new episodes took to various platforms to express their disappointment. One user tweeted, "I wanted to continue watching the last season of You and my Netflix is DOWN." Another added, "Netflix is still down & not working. It collapses, gives standard codes and if you login again it just starts over and over. This is on all devices across - except iPhone (which also will not continue to next episode). Hope it gets resolved quickly." This admission came after an individual on Downdetector’s message board claimed to have contacted Netflix directly, receiving assurance that the issue was a new problem that the company was actively working to resolve.

The streaming service appears to have rectified the issue as of late Thursday, with their status page reflecting a green checkmark, signaling that services were back to normal. However, the exact cause of the glitch remains unclear. Netflix has a history of encountering technical difficulties, with the last notable outage occurring in December 2023, alongside a significant delay during a live reunion episode of the hit dating show Love Is Blind. During that incident, viewers experienced over an hour of waiting before learning that the episode was no longer live, prompting Netflix to apologize to its audience for the inconvenience.

Despite the technical hiccup, Netflix continues to boast a massive global subscriber base. According to their fourth-quarter earnings report from 2024, the company has approximately 301.63 million subscribers worldwide. This extensive reach underscores the importance of maintaining a reliable streaming experience for its users, especially during peak viewing times.
