Netflix Cuts Another Show Amid Rising Cancellations

Unstable becomes the latest casualty as Netflix navigates viewer engagement and production costs

Netflix has recently made headlines with its continuing trend of canceling original shows, leaving fans to question the platform's decision-making strategies. The latest casualties are two shows, including the workplace comedy Unstable, co-created by Rob Lowe and his son, John Owen Lowe, which has generated considerable fanfare but failed to secure its spot for yet another season.

Just weeks after the cancellation of That '90s Show, the news broke about Unstable not being renewed for a third season. This cancellation was confirmed to the production staff, adding to the growing list of Netflix shows facing the chopping block. The final season of Unstable had been released on August 1, 2024, but it failed to make it to the streamer's coveted Top 10, leading to its swift demise.

Despite the enthusiasm surrounding the show - which centered on the eccentric tech mogul Ellis Dragon, played by Rob Lowe, and his son Jackson, portrayed by John Owen - Netflix seems to have determined the cost versus viewership balance was not favorable enough for renewal. Reports suggest Netflix has been tightening its belt, often opting to cut shows after just one or two seasons rather than risk continued spending.

Poor performance metrics are not the only reason behind these cancellations. The challenges posed by the Hollywood strikes have also been identified as detrimental. During the strike, the gap between seasons widened, causing Unstable to lose some of its initial momentum, which can lead to decreased visibility and engagement from audiences.

Rob Lowe, who viewed Unstable as something of a passion project and was excited to act alongside his son, expressed disappointment over the cancellation but quickly turned his attention to the future. He reported the production team is currently exploring options to shop the show around to other networks, similar to what happened with other shows post-cancellation.

There’s still hope, albeit slim, for fans of the show. Previous Netflix cancellations have seen varying degrees of success finding new homes elsewhere—One Day at a Time was one notable success, having been picked up by other networks after its initial axing. If Unstable were to be shopped around, it would likely target right-to-air networks where it could potentially find a welcoming audience new to its charm.

This trend of canceling original programming isn’t limited to just Unstable. The platform's broader strategy has recently seen the axe fall on various shows. Besides That ‘90s Show, which was another of Netflix's original productions, the streaming giant also shut down Kaos, leaving viewers wondering what the future holds for the range of other original properties.

All of these rapid-fire decisions point to Netflix's current strategy of cleaning house, often opting to prioritize new content and larger engagements rather than maintaining expensive series, regardless of their budding fan bases. Though it’s proven to be successful previously, such decisions can alienate loyal audiences who become invested in their favorite characters and narratives.

The first two seasons of Unstable successfully introduced viewers to the comedic tension and heartfelt dynamics between two very different generations. Ellis' unusual antics were juxtaposed with Jackson's more conventional approach to life and business. While season one saw Jackson stepping up to stabilize both his father and their shared tech firm after the loss of his mother, season two ramped up the absurdity with Ellis attempting to run for President, leading to more comedic shenanigans.

While it is disheartening to see strong comedic performances of Rob and John Owen Lowe go unrewarded, fans will still have two seasons to enjoy whenever they want. Each version captured the highs and lows of family relationships, particularly when navigated through the lens of humor—a hallmark of the Lowe’s performances.

After Unstable, fans may want to keep their eyes peeled for any updates on upcoming Netflix shows as the streaming service continues to evolve its content strategy. For those who adore Rob Lowe's talent and peculiar charisma, there are still other projects and performances available to revisit.

While it is true the streaming era has created both expansive opportunities for diverse storytelling and caution due to the unpredictable path of cancellations, viewers will continue their search for the next big hit. The industry remains dynamic, and as Netflix adjusts its programming slate, fans are left pondering what will get axed next and which underdog show will rise up to capture audiences' hearts anew.
