Netflix Announces New Adaptation Of Pride And Prejudice

Dolly Alderton and Euros Lyn lead the project with an all-star cast.

In a thrilling announcement that has fans of classic literature buzzing, Netflix revealed on April 10, 2025, that it will adapt Jane Austen's beloved novel Pride and Prejudice into a six-part limited series. This new rendition will be penned by best-selling author Dolly Alderton and directed by Euros Lyn, who is known for his work on Netflix's Heartstopper.

Set to star in the adaptation are Emma Corrin as Elizabeth Bennet, Jack Lowden as Mr. Darcy, and Olivia Colman as Mrs. Bennet. Alderton expressed her excitement about the project, stating, “Once in a generation, a group of people get to retell this wonderful story and I feel very lucky that I get to be a part of it.” She emphasized that Austen's work is the "blueprint for romantic comedy," and she aims to bring both familiar and fresh perspectives to the narrative.

While the series is still in the early stages of production, it promises to be a faithful adaptation that closely follows the original text. Alderton noted, “The book is a gift to adapt—packed with drama and depth as well as comedy and charm.” The adaptation aims to explore the complexities of love, family, friendship, and society while retaining Austen's keen observational voice.

The story revolves around Elizabeth Bennet, the second of five daughters in a Regency-era setting, and her complicated relationship with the wealthy and aloof Mr. Darcy. Their journey from initial misjudgments to eventual love serves as the heart of the narrative, which has captivated readers since the novel's anonymous publication in 1813. Over 20 million copies of Pride and Prejudice have been sold, solidifying its place in literary history.

Emma Corrin, who gained fame for her role as Princess Diana in The Crown, expressed her enthusiasm about portraying Elizabeth Bennet, calling it a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity." She remarked, “To be able to bring this iconic character to life, alongside Olivia and Jack, with Dolly’s phenomenal scripts, is truly the greatest honor. I can’t wait for a new generation to fall in love with this story all over again.”

Jack Lowden, known for his performances in Benediction and Slow Horses, will step into the shoes of Mr. Darcy, while Olivia Colman, an Oscar-winning actress celebrated for her roles in The Favourite and The Crown, will portray Mrs. Bennet. Colman and Corrin have previously worked together on The Crown, creating a sense of reunion on this new project.

Director Euros Lyn, who has a rich history of adapting literary works for the screen, also shared his excitement for the project. He aims to reintroduce these iconic characters to both long-time fans and newcomers alike. “With Euros Lyn directing our stellar cast, I am so excited to reintroduce these hilarious and complicated characters to those who count Pride and Prejudice as their favorite book, and those who are yet to meet their Lizzie and Mr. Darcy,” Alderton stated.

As for filming, production is set to commence in the United Kingdom sometime in 2025. Although no specific release date has been announced, the series is tentatively expected to air in late 2025 or early 2026. As fans eagerly await this new adaptation, they can look forward to the re-release of the acclaimed 2005 film adaptation, which starred Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen, celebrating its 20th anniversary in theaters starting April 18, 2025.

Netflix’s Mona Qureshi expressed the streaming platform’s commitment to sharing this beloved British classic with a global audience, stating, “Pride and Prejudice is the ultimate romantic comedy. Dolly’s fierce intelligence and enormous heart, twinned with her genuine love of the Austen novel, means she is able to bring new insights while celebrating all that the generations of fans hold so dear.”

Over the years, Pride and Prejudice has seen numerous adaptations across various media, including the 1995 miniseries featuring Colin Firth, whose portrayal of Mr. Darcy has become iconic. In fact, a shirt worn by Firth during the series sold for £20,000 at a charity auction in 2024, highlighting the enduring legacy of this classic tale.

With Alderton’s fresh take on the story, fans can expect a blend of humor, romance, and social commentary that resonates with both contemporary audiences and traditionalists. As anticipation builds, the upcoming Netflix series promises to be a significant addition to the rich tapestry of Pride and Prejudice adaptations, inviting viewers to experience Austen's timeless narrative anew.
