Netflix Acquires Gripping Israeli Drama Bad Boy

Streaming giant expands global offerings with compelling series from Euphoria creator Ron Leshem

Netflix has made headlines by acquiring the global streaming rights to the much-anticipated Israeli drama series, Bad Boy. This gripping show is the brainchild of Ron Leshem, the creator known for his work on the original series Euphoria. It marks North Road’s inaugural foray as an international co-production, showcasing how the streaming giant is eager to expand its diverse offerings with international talent.

Set against the backdrop of piercing realities faced by youth, Bad Boy is inspired by true events. The story revolves around Dean, a young man trapped within the walls of a harsh juvenile detention facility. There, he forms a bond with Zoro, another teen locked away for murder. Their relationship becomes pivotal as Dean navigates life under severe conditions, reflecting on friendship, survival, and the impact of their environment on their futures.

Fast forward two decades later, Dean has transformed his past struggles and experiences inside the prison system to leap forward as a successful comedian. Yet, the shadow of his youthful indiscretions looms, creating tension as he struggles to keep his past hidden from his present life.

Leshem not only serves as showrunner but has also taken on the role of writer, bringing his unique insights to the table. Joining him is director Hagar Ben-Asher, who has previously directed Dead Women Walking. The cast includes Daniel Chen, Havtamo Farda, and Guy Manster, who are set to bring these complex characters to life.

Initially unveiled to great anticipation back in March 2023, Bad Boy was heralded by Leshem as potentially becoming “the next Euphoria,” engaging audiences with its raw storytelling and character depth. This ambitious project is not only produced by North Road but also co-financed by Israeli outfit Sipur, alongside Tedy Productions and HOT, the Israeli broadcaster.

Set to premiere on Israeli network HOT early next year, Bad Boy is already generating buzz and is expected to drop on Netflix across 190 territories worldwide following its local airing. The anticipation is building as Netflix enriches its library with more Israeli content, which includes acclaimed series like Unorthodox, Shtisel, and Bros. This strategic acquisition is seen as part of Netflix's broader effort to capitalize on compelling narratives from diverse cultures.

This surge of international programming is reflective of Netflix's commitment to providing varied and rich content for all audiences, tapping directly from the burgeoning pool of global storytelling talent. With the streaming service's capabilities and marketing prowess, Bad Boy seems poised to make waves across numerous markets, drawing audiences intrigued by its compelling narrative and dramatic themes.
