Neftehimik Stuns Traktor With 3:1 Victory

A decisive win helps Neftehimik stay competitive for the KHL playoffs, halting Traktor's momentum.

Neftehimik’s hockey team achieved a remarkable upset against Traktor Chelyabinsk, winning the KHL match on February 23 with a score of 3:1, showcasing resilience and strategic prowess.

The match, held at Traktor's home ice, kicked off with the home team, Traktor, quickly taking the lead when Mikhail Goryunov-Rolgizer struck within the first 13 seconds of play. His assist came from VITALY KRAVTSOV, extending his points streak to four games, setting the tone for what promised to be another solid performance for Traktor, who currently lead the Eastern Conference with 82 points.

But Neftehimik, positioned ninth and desperate for points to contend for the playoff spot, responded swiftly. Evgeny Mityakin equalized for the visitors, finishing off a slick pass from Bulat Shafigullin, leveling the game at 1:1.

Transitioning to the second period, Traktor struggled, with multiple penalties hampering their play. A missed chance to capitalize on Neftehimik penalties led to frustration among the home team as Neftehimik seized the opportunity to gain the upper hand. Mityakin scored again, netting his second goal and giving Neftehimik a 2:1 lead.

The third period saw Traktor apply pressure, attempting to regain their footing. Yet, Neftehimik’s defense held strong, weathering the storm of attacks. The visitors finally sealed their victory with Jean-Sebastien Di scoring on the 54th minute, pushing the score to 3:1.

Despite Traktor's efforts, including removing their goalie to add extra manpower late in the game, they could not tally another goal, succumbing to Neftehimik’s game plan and strong defensive strategy.

Coach Benoit Grou applauded his team's discipline and execution, stating, “We played our game and were disciplined.” On the flip side, Goryunov-Rolgizer lamented, “We made many mistakes and our discipline faltered.”

This win for Neftehimik not only uplifts their morale but also solidifies their aspirations for the playoffs. They now sit eight points away from the playoff zone, with their next game scheduled against Amur on February 28. Meanwhile, Traktor faces Ak Bars on their home turf, determined to rebound from this surprising defeat.

Neftehimik’s victory also prevented Metallurg Magnitogorsk from securing an early playoff berth, hinting at the competitive nature of the league this season. The dynamics on the ice highlighted how quickly fortunes could shift, emphasizing the need for diligence, focus, and strong teamwork.

With the stakes rising as the KHL season progresses, both teams will need to refine their strategies and maintain discipline to capitalize on scoring opportunities and strengthen their playoff positions. Fans are left eagerly anticipating the next matchups and the potential ups and downs the hockey season will undoubtedly bring.
