As the clock struck 2:00 PM on Sunday, May 4, 2025, the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Undergraduate (NEET-UG) commenced, marking a significant day for over 22.7 lakh aspirants across India. The exam, held at 5,453 centres in more than 500 cities, has become a critical gateway for students aspiring to enter the medical field.
This year, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has implemented stringent security measures to ensure a fair examination process, particularly following controversies surrounding the NEET-UG 2024, which included allegations of paper leaks and irregularities. A three-tier surveillance system was established at the district, state, and centre levels to monitor the examination closely.
According to officials from the Ministry of Education, most exam centres are located in government and aided institutions, reflecting a commitment to maintaining transparency and integrity in the examination process. "Students are strongly advised to depend solely on the official updates available on the NTA's website," the NTA advisory emphasized, warning against unverified sources claiming influence over exam results.
On the day of the exam, candidates were required to arrive at their respective centres by 1:30 PM, with no entry permitted after this time. The exam format consisted of 180 compulsory questions across Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, to be completed in three hours. The NTA has reverted to a pre-Covid format, eliminating optional questions and emphasizing the need for candidates to manage their time effectively.
To facilitate a smooth examination experience, the NTA provided clear guidelines on necessary documents. Candidates were required to carry their admit cards, two passport-sized photographs identical to those uploaded in their application forms, and a postcard-sized color photograph with a white background. Additionally, valid photo identification, such as a PAN card, Driving License, or Aadhaar card, was mandatory for entry.
In a bid to maintain exam integrity, the NTA prohibited various items from being brought into the exam hall, including electronic devices, printed materials, and any metallic items. Candidates were advised to wear light-colored, casual clothing with short sleeves, and to avoid heavy garments or accessories.
In anticipation of the exam, a mock drill was conducted at all centres on May 3, 2025, to ensure that all security measures were in place, including the functionality of mobile network jammers and the availability of adequate staff for monitoring and frisking. This proactive approach was part of the NTA's strategy to prevent malpractice and ensure a secure examination environment.
Moreover, the NTA has taken steps to address the harsh summer conditions by instructing authorities to provide essential facilities at testing centres, including drinking water, reliable electricity, and emergency health services, such as first aid and ambulances.
As students prepared for the exam, they were reminded of the importance of mastering their reactions to challenging questions. Nabin Karki, the national academic director at Aakash Educational Services Limited, noted, "Mastering the syllabus is not enough now. You have to master your reactions." This advice underscores the high-pressure environment that candidates face during the NEET-UG.
While the number of registered candidates saw a slight decrease from previous years, the competition remains fierce. In 2024, 24,06,079 candidates registered for the exam, while 20,87,462 registered in 2023. The NTA expects that the participation will continue to reflect the growing interest in medical careers among students.
In light of last year's controversies, the NTA has emphasized its commitment to restoring credibility and ensuring a fair examination process. The agency has warned that any attempts at cheating, impersonation, or the use of unfair means will result in strict penalties, including the cancellation of results and a three-year ban from future examinations.
