Nebraska Volleyball Sweeps Wisconsin, Advances To Final Four

Huskers overpower Badgers, showcasing dominant defense and offense at Bob Devaney Center.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers volleyball team has once again demonstrated their dominance on the court as they swept the Wisconsin Badgers, 3-0, to secure their place in the 2024 NCAA Final Four. The match, held at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Sunday, December 15, 2024, showcased Nebraska's formidable defense and powerful offensive strategy.

The Huskers reached this pivotal showdown after solid performances against Florida A&M, Miami, and Dayton. Their road to the Final Four highlighted their skill and resilience, culminating in this impressive victory over the Badgers, which marks the third time Nebraska has triumphed over Wisconsin this season.

Set scores from the match were tight yet telling: Nebraska edged out the Badgers 26-24, followed by stronger displays with 25-17 and 25-21 victories. Taylor Landfair led the charge for the Huskers with 13 kills, asserting her presence throughout the match and maintaining pressure on Wisconsin's defense.

John Cook, Nebraska's head coach, praised his team's performance against one of their most formidable rivals. "I think this is one of the hardest regional finals we have ever had because of Wisconsin. They are a phenomenal team... We had to play our very best match of the year to win this match today," he stated post-game. Cook acknowledged the significant contribution of the fans, remarking on the incredible atmosphere in the Devaney Center: "I asked our crowd to will us, and I'm not sure I have heard the Devaney this loud for this long every point. Thanks to our crowd, they were unbelievable today."

Defensively, the Cornhuskers were relentless, forcing Wisconsin to settle for a hitting percentage of just .126%, with Nebraska accounting for 12 blocks. This defensive prowess has been pivotal throughout their tournament run, clearly evident as they thwarted Wisconsin’s attacks.

Andi Jackson and Harper Murray were also key players for Nebraska, each contributing ten kills. Jackson's impressive hitting percentage of .474 showcased her efficiency on the court, complementing Landfair's offensive firepower. Defensively, libero Lexi Rodriguez shone with 17 digs, highlighting Nebraska's commitment to stopping the Badgers at every turn.

On the flip side, Wisconsin struggled to find their rhythm, with Sarah Franklin, the reigning National Player of the Year, leading the Badgers with 12 kills. Yet, it was not enough to overcome Nebraska's well-rounded performance.

Looking forward, Nebraska is set to face the winner of the matchup between Penn State and Creighton in the semifinals, which will take place on Thursday, December 19. The anticipation surrounding Nebraska's run to the championship emphasizes their status as serious contenders for the title this season.

Murray reflected on her individual accolades during this match, stating, "It means a lot, but I think I owe it all to my teammates and the coaches, because I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for them." This sentiment of unity and collaboration is what Cook aims to instill within his players. Murray also conveyed the team’s collective expectation, noting, "The expectation here is to make it to the National Championship. With it, there’s pressure, but we play for each other."

For the Nebraska volleyball program, reaching the Final Four is not just about the accomplishments on the court but also about maintaining their legacy within collegiate volleyball. The Cornhuskers are on their way to Louisville, where they aim for not just participation but to contend for the national championship title—a goal they have set their eyes on since the start of the season.

With Cook at the helm, the team’s focus remains unwavering. "I already told both Lexi (Rodriguez) and Merritt (Beason) this is their team and they willed them to a win," he emphasized as he appreciated the contributions of his seniors. The culmination of their effort and teamwork leaves them poised for what promises to be another thrilling round of collegiate volleyball.

Staying on course and remaining grounded will be key for Nebraska as they rush onward to Louisville with their eyes on the prize. The drive to achieve greatness is palpable, and as the tournament progresses, one thing remains clear: the Huskers are ready to make their mark.
