Nebraska High School Wrestling Championships Showcase New Champions

Omaha Skutt's Tyler Harrill secures third title as schools celebrate strong performances at the state tournament.

Saturday marked another day of triumph for high school wrestlers across Nebraska as the state championships unfolded at the CHI Health Center, showcasing both individual talent and team prowess. One of the standout competitors was Tyler Harrill of Omaha Skutt, who secured his third consecutive gold medal at the event, dominating his weight class with remarkable skill and determination.

Harrill, a junior wrestler known for his focused and disciplined approach, showcased his skills by outscoring his opponents 56-4 leading up to the finals. He claimed victory with authority, pinning Central City’s Bryce Kunz just 70 seconds after the match began. "Got my mind right and came out here and got a quick pin," Harrill stated, reflecting his strategic mindset and competitive nature.

SkyHawk coach Chas DeVetter praised Harrill's relentless drive to improve. "He’s just a great competitor. And just gettingbetter andbetter all the time,” he remarked, indicating the wrestler's potential as he heads toward what could be his fourth gold medal next year, making him only the sixth wrestler from his program to achieve this milestone.

Despite his accomplishments, Harrill’s talent often goes understated within the broader wrestling community. "That’s a great question," DeVetter responded when asked why Harrill might be overlooked. "We just had a lot of dominant wrestlers on our team. But he definitely shouldn’t be. He was dominant, too." Harrill, for his part, was content to let his wrestling do the talking, saying, "I just go out there and do my thing."

Harrill wasn’t the only champion for Omaha Skutt on the day—the team celebrated five medalists overall, marking their best performance since 2009, and adding to their impressive total of 22 state titles. DeVetter credited the entire roster for their hard work and dedication through the season. Senior Cade Ziola also added to the day's successes, claiming his third gold medal, creating notable camaraderie and encouragement among the athletes.

Meanwhile, at the Class D championships, David City Aquinas’s Kelby Coufal celebrated his own monumental victory, triumphing over Central Valley's William Pokorny to clinch the 157-pound title. The intensity of the competition was palpable, with Coufal embracing the moment after his decisive win. "Hell yeah!" he exclaimed post-fight, embodying the excitement of the championship atmosphere.

Support was overwhelming for the young wrestlers, as families and schools came together to cheer on their local athletes during the Parade of Champions, which has become a cherished tradition at these state events.

At the same time, Big Red wrestlers like Logan Glynn from Millard South and Jaeston Delano from Columbus each made headlines with their performances. Glynn decisively defeated Lincoln East’s Ryder Kruse to become the Class A 157-pound champion; Delano's thrilling win against Papillion-La Vista's Sterling Sindelar also left fans buzzing with excitement over the potential these athletes display.

The championships revealed not just individual victories but also the pride and hard work behind successful wrestling programs throughout the state. Dundee wrestlers wrapped up their run with their eighth consecutive Division 3 title, showcasing their long-standing dominance within high school wrestling traditions.

"If you look at the state of Michigan, our program is undoubtedly one of the strongest, if not the strongest," said Dundee coach Rob Baughman. The depth of talent across various weight classes was on full display as each competitor fought vigorously for their school’s honor.

Many wrestlers demonstrated their technical prowess throughout the day, and their performances emphasized the importance of preparation, resilience, and sportsmanship. Each match produced unforgettable moments, whether it was strenuous competition or the sportsmanship displayed after the final whistle.

With championships concluded for this season, attention now shifts to the next generation of wrestlers. Future competitions will be shaped by the lessons learned and the collective success celebrated at this year’s state championships. From standouts like Harrill and Coufal to the collective achievements of numerous teams, Nebraska wrestling continues to pave the way for aspiring young athletes, building momentum for the next season with lessons learned and aspirations set high. With storied programs and promising newcomers ready to seize the opportunity on the mat, the anticipation for next year’s championship now begins.
