Nebraska Governor Pillen Injured Following Horse Riding Accident

Jim Pillen undergoes treatment for multiple injuries after being thrown from his horse during family ride.

Columbus, Neb. - Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen was hospitalized over the weekend after being thrown from his horse during a family ride, according to his office.

On Sunday, December 24, the 68-year-old governor was riding with family members when he was bucked off what was described as a new horse. Following the incident, he was transported to Columbus Community Hospital and then, out of caution, transferred to the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) in Omaha.

The governor sustained injuries including damage to his spleen, several rib fractures, and a minor fracture to one of his vertebrae. He was reported to be alert and responsive, maintaining communication with his staff. Doctors at Nebraska Medicine indicated he was stable upon arrival and underwent a procedure known as prophylactic embolization to address bleeding from the spleen injury.

According to Dr. Hillman Terzian, who is treating Pillen at UNMC, the governor's condition allows him to interact with his medical team, and he is motivated to recover, already beginning to walk laps around the ward.

“He has been very, very motivated to get out of bed,” Dr. Terzian shared, adding, “We’re optimistic and we think he has a very good prognosis.” While there will be no immediate follow-up surgeries necessary, doctors will continue to monitor his rib injuries closely over the next few days.

Pillen's office conveyed gratitude on behalf of the governor and his family for the outpouring of prayers and well-wishes from the public. “Gov. Pillen and his family are very appreciative of the thoughts and prayers from Nebraskans and they wish all Nebraskans a very merry Christmas,” stated his office.

Reactions from Nebraska's political figures followed the news of his hospitalization. Former Governor Pete Ricketts shared his sentiment on social media platform X, urging Nebraskans to join him and his wife in prayer for Pillen's recovery. Various congressional representatives from Nebraska also expressed their well wishes.

Pillen has been the governor since January 2023 and prior to his election, he was known as both a veterinarian and hog farmer within the state. His political career has seen him engage with various statewide issues, including notable national discussions, especially surrounding Nebraska's unique electoral voting process.

With his recovery expected to take several days, many are expressing hope for his swift return to full health, particularly as his family celebrates the holiday season. The community remains eager for updates and stands united behind their leader at this difficult time. Pillen, who has four children and seven grandchildren, will likely be spending Christmas in the hospital this year.

This incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictability associated with horseback riding, even for those experienced like Pillen. Safety precautions and gear might typically help prevent injuries, but the nature of riding can always bring unforeseen challenges.

Updates on his condition will likely follow as his office continues to provide information to the public, ensuring transparency about the governor's health and recovery process. Members of the community are encouraged to reach out with their support during this time.

For now, Governor Pillen is focused on recovery, as Nebraskans look forward to welcoming their leader back once he is well.
