LINCOLN, NE – Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen is on the mend following successful rib fixation surgery carried out at Nebraska Medicine on Christmas Day. The procedure was necessitated by injuries he sustained during a recent horseback riding accident.
Governor Pillen, who was thrown from his horse during the incident near Columbus, Nebraska, suffered multiple injuries, including seven fractured ribs on his left side, which can be terribly painful and may limit movement, according to Dr. Hillman Terzian of Nebraska Medicine. The governor also sustained injuries to his spleen, kidney, and vertebrae.
Doctors initially carried out surgery to address bleeding around the spleen before focusing on the ribs, which are often serious injuries requiring careful management for pain and healing. After consultation with his medical team, Pillen opted for rib fixation, which involves stabilizing the broken ribs using metal plates. This procedure is increasingly viewed as effective for severe injuries or multiple rib fractures.
"Rib fractures can be very painful and prevent patients from moving, which can lead to complications," said Dr. Terzian. "We want him to have adequate respiratory function, and as he's an active person, we want to return him to an active lifestyle," added Dr. Charity Evans, another member of his medical team.
The governor's surgery lasted approximately four hours, and he was returned to the step-down unit where he will continue recovery. His office released updates following the surgery, indicating the operation went smoothly and there were no new issues affecting his lung or kidney injuries.
During his time under anesthesia, Lt. Governor Joe Kelly took on the role of acting governor, as is required by the Nebraska Constitution. The Governor's Office has emphasized Pillen's gratitude for the exceptional care he received and for the outpouring of support from Nebraskans during his recovery.
Despite the injuries, the governor remains focused on resuming his gubernatorial duties. He had previously laid out his legislative agenda, which includes pressing issues such as taxes and policies surrounding transgender athletes. Consequently, the governor's recovery is of great interest not only from a health perspective but also from the angle of his leadership role, especially with the legislative session just around the corner.
Looking forward, the governor is expected to remain hospitalized for several more days for observation and recovery. Medical professionals at Nebraska Medicine, recognized as leaders in rib fixation procedures, are committed to helping him return to full health and functionality.
This incident has underscored the inherent risks associated with horseback riding, even among experienced riders and recreational enthusiasts. Meanwhile, the community continues to send well wishes and support to Governor Pillen and his family during this challenging time.
