Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen is staying hospitalized at the Nebraska Medical Center for several more days following surgery to stabilize ribs broken during a horseback riding accident. His office released information on Thursday, stating the surgery was successful and he has since been moved to a step-down unit to continue his recovery.
On Sunday, Pilien was bucked from a horse he was riding near Columbus with family members, resulting in severe injuries. He broke seven ribs on his left side and also suffered injuries to his kidney and spleen, as well as fracturing a vertebrae in his lower back. Initially, he needed surgery to address bleeding around the spleen, which has since begun to heal, according to his office.
Doctors have reported no new complications concerning the injuries to his kidney and lung. They previously indicated these injuries are expected to heal naturally over time. After evaluating the extent of his injuries on Monday, Pillen and his medical team decided to proceed with rib fixation, which had initially been considered following the accident. Such fractures can cause intense pain, difficulty breathing, and prevent patients from moving—risking potential complications.
Rib fixation is the process of stabilizing broken ribs with metal plates, and is increasingly viewed as beneficial for cases of severe injuries or multiple rib fractures. Doctors at the Nebraska Medical Center have involved themselves in research focused on the efficacy of this procedure for similar injuries. The surgery was estimated to take around four hours.
During the procedure, Lt. Governor Joe Kelly fulfilled the role of acting governor, as mandated by the Nebraska Constitution. Prior to the surgery, Pillen publicly expressed his gratitude for the exceptional care he has received from the medical staff at Nebraska Medicine and acknowledged the support from Nebraskans for his family during this challenging time.
Pillen and his wife, First Lady Suzanne Pillen, also shared well wishes with the public, sending Christmas and Hanukkah greetings to the residents of Nebraska. The incident has not only attracted attention toward the governor’s health but also showcased the strong community spirit surrounding him.
The aftermath of the accident highlights not just the risks associated with horseback riding, but also the importance of prompt medical intervention. The governor's decision to undergo rib fixation will likely contribute to enhanced healing and management of pain as he recuperates.
This incident serves as a reminder of the unexpected nature of life and the resilience required to recover from traumatic events. Governor Pillen's commitment to healing, coupled with the unwavering support from the Nebraska community, underlines the values of care and solidarity during difficult times.
