NBC Launches New Medical Mockumentary Series Today

St. Denis Medical follows the comedic lives of hospital staff blending humor and real-life struggles.

Mockumentary television is experiencing fresh innovation as new series and unique crossovers captivate audiences. NBC is set to premiere its latest comedic endeavor, St. Denis Medical, on November 12, 2024, intertwining humor with the often serious world of healthcare.

This new series follows the trials and tribulations of the staff at St. Denis Medical, an underfunded hospital located in Oregon. The talented cast includes Wendi McLendon-Covey as Joyce, the executive director; Allison Tolman as Alex, the compassionate nurse; Kahyun Kim as Serena, the self-assured nurse; and David Alan Grier as the grouchy emergency physician, Ron. Alongside them is Josh Lawson as Bruce, the confident and slightly arrogant trauma surgeon.

The show's premise promises comedic challenges as the characters navigate their responsibilities of saving lives and maintaining personal relationships. Josh Lawson humorously described one episode titled “A Peanut and Caramel-Filled Miracle,” which showcases Bruce's rivalry with Ron over the last candy bar available at the hospital. "[Kahyun] is the snack-centric actor... I think she’s thinking about snacks 80% of the time," he joked to Nerd Reactor.

Another highlight for the series is its Christmas special, where hijinks ensue with a unique twist. Lawson explained, "It’s somewhat of a romantic storyline where a well-meaning fiancé-to-be... caught in an engagement ring. And lucky for him, it’s Bruce to the rescue." The actor expressed his excitement, noting, "It was brilliant. I was tickled by it," referring to his enjoyment of filming his first Christmas episode.

Across the television spectrum, another intriguing development is set to take place as the casts of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Abbott Elementary join forces for their first crossover episode. This highly anticipated collaboration will air on January 8, showcasing how the two shows, which differ significantly in tone and audience, adapt to work together.

Rob McElhenney, who plays the conflicted bouncer of Paddy's Pub, teased to the LA Times how the documentary style of Abbott Elementary influences the behavior of his character and the ensemble. By portraying characters under constant camera surveillance, the gang must alter their habits, staying true to their essence yet adjusting to the setting. He explained, "If we’re not acting the way...we’re putting it on the show." This setup allows the Always Sunny characters to still exhibit charm and humor, albeit with some restraint.

Quinta Brunson, creator and star of Abbott Elementary, added to this exploration of character depth. "Our documentary is being filmed because they’re seeking funds...you’re going to put, probably, a bluer version of yourself," she reflected. The crossover could reveal unexpected dimensions of her character and others, enhancing the viewing experience for fans of both shows as they explore the nuances beneath their familiar façades.

Meanwhile, fans of What We Do in the Shadows are facing the end of what has been described as one of the most distinctive mockumentaries. Taika Waititi reflected on the series' surprising longevity, expressing skepticism when the show first began. "That has much too long to have lasted," he said, showcasing his incredulity at the success of the show after it became part of television pop culture. He noted he was proud, yet bemused by how long it thrived, having originally believed it was based on just "a five-minute idea" transformed over six entertaining seasons.

These highlights from the mockumentary genre demonstrate its vibrant evolution, combining humor, authentic character exploration, and innovative storytelling. Whether it’s the new adventures of hospital staff, comedically conflicted pub owners, or misfit vampires, mockumentaries continue to entertain and invite viewers to reflect on the quirks of humanity.
