Navy QB Blake Horvath Breaks Record With 95-Yard TD Run

Horvath leads Midshipmen to thrilling comeback win over Oklahoma at Armed Forces Bowl.

Blake Horvath made history on Friday, December 27, 2024, with his record-breaking 95-yard touchdown run as he led the Navy Midshipmen to a thrilling 21-20 victory over the Oklahoma Sooners in the Armed Forces Bowl. This remarkable play marked the longest run in Navy football history, surpassing the previous record of 93 yards set by Johnny Sai during the Roger Staubach era against Duke back in 1963.

Horvath's impressive run came late in the third quarter, tying the game at 14-14. He later capped off the scoring with a 6-yard touchdown run with just 4:34 left, solidifying Navy’s remarkable comeback after initially trailing by two touchdowns. "By somebody that's not really fast," he humbly noted after the game, reflecting on his incredible achievement.

The game started ominously for Navy, as the Sooners jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead within the first quarter. Oklahoma struck first with Gavin Sawchuk’s 21-yard touchdown run, followed by Michael Hawkins Jr. connecting with Jake Roberts for another touchdown. Yet, the Midshipmen refused to fold under pressure, thanks largely to Horvath's standout performance.

Horvath's historic run was not merely due to individual prowess. After faking the handoff on the read-option, he squeezed through the defensive line, skillfully evading pursuit and dashing down the field. He stretched the ball over the goal line just as he was being tackled, initially ruled short until video review confirmed the touchdown. "Some tendencies they showed earlier, just thought I could get a pull," Horvath explained about his thought process during the play.

His teammate, Brandon Chatman, played a pivotal role as well, making key blocks to free Horvath from defenders. "Brandon Chatman actually busted his tail to get his butt down the field. I can see him out of the corner of my eye busting his butt. And honestly, it’s almost not even my touchdown without him and the offensive line blocking," Horvath acknowledged, attributing the play to teamwork.

Following his dazzling 95-yard run, Horvath also managed to convert on fourth and 3 with a 16-yard pass to Eli Heidenrich, which set up his go-ahead touchdown, demonstrating not just his rushing ability but his passing skills as well. Navy head coach Brian Newberry praised this decision: "I thought, if we go score right there, it might be the difference in the game. And it was," he said, highlighting the strategic significance of their plays.

Even after Navy took the lead, the game remained tense until the final moments. With only six seconds left, Oklahoma managed to score again, but instead of opting for the tie, the Sooners went for the two-point conversion. It was at this moment when Navy's defensive line came through, with Justin Reed sacking Hawkins and ensuring the Midshipmen held onto their hard-fought victory. "It was a great play...we just made sure to stay composed after them just getting the touchdown," Reed stated, highlighting the defense's poise under pressure.

This win not only signified Navy's sixth 10-win season, but it also marked their first victory over Oklahoma, making them 2-0 against the Sooners. Newberry reflected on the importance of this victory, saying, "It symbolizes everything these guys have been through, especially the seniors," referencing the challenges and growth the team experienced throughout the season.

Horvath, who is also a semifinalist for the 2024 Comeback Player of the Year Award, finished the game with 155 rushing yards on 18 carries, and he completed seven of his 12 passes for 92 yards. Other key contributors included running back Alex Tecza, who also scored on an 11-yard rush.

Oklahoma’s season ends at 6-7, and their head coach Brent Venables remarked on the season's difficulties and future growth potential. They faced significant roster changes and injuries, with notable omissions from key positions. Roberts, one of the Sooners' players, commented on the growth experienced throughout this challenging season, indicating resilience as they move forward.

With both teams ending their seasons on contrasting notes, Navy is positioned well for the future as Horvath and all of their offensive skill starters are set to return next season. The Midshipmen aim to build on this season’s success starting August 30 against VMI. The Armed Forces Bowl victory not only crowned Horvath’s stellar performance but also revitalized Navy football, setting the stage for its promising future.
