Naver Cloud And Kakao Expand AI And Sports Initiatives

Naver's commitment to Sovereign AI and partnerships with KBO illustrate growing ambitions in Southeast Asia and domestic sports engagement.

Naver Cloud has made a significant announcement at the NVIDIA 'GTC 2025' conference, with CEO Kim Yu-won emphasizing the company's commitment to establishing a 'Sovereign AI' ecosystem that aims to achieve tangible results in Southeast Asia within the year. This initiative highlights Naver's extensive capabilities across the AI value chain, leveraging AI services, data, supercomputing infrastructure, and cloud solutions to tailor technology specifically for countries and enterprises aspiring to develop their own sovereign AI.

During the conference, Kim participated in the 'Sovereign AI Summit' session, where he introduced HyperCLOVA X, a large language model (LLM) specifically designed for non-English languages. He discussed the potential for empowering nations and businesses to build autonomous AI systems. "To solve the problems faced by each country and enterprise, a sovereign AI capability is essential, and Naver will actively support these countries and businesses," he stated.

This move comes as Naver has already established 'Naver Arabia' in Saudi Arabia to forge stronger ties within the Middle East market. Last March, Naver partnered with Aramco Digital to develop an Arabic-based sovereign AI, and more recently, it entered a collaboration with the AI semiconductor company LiBELLium. Both efforts are aimed at bolstering AI infrastructure in regions that have not yet been prioritized by larger global tech companies.

Naver's strategy is not limited to the Middle East; it's also eyeing Southeast Asia, a region ripe for AI development. Kim noted, "The Sovereign AI strategy will target the Middle East and Southeast Asian markets, which are currently underexplored by global tech giants. In doing so, Naver recognizes the growing demand for localized AI solutions that cater specifically to regional languages and needs." This broadens Naver's focus in AI infrastructure development, which many see as a vital step in enhancing the technological landscape in emerging markets.

Shifting gears to the domestic front, Naver has also partnered with Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) to enhance its marketing efforts for the upcoming season. Announced earlier this month, Naver Sports will implement 'Jikgwan Cheerleading', a program aimed at engaging fans attending the games. Starting from the 2025 regular season, this initiative allows attendees to share live moments from the games, contributing to a sense of community among fans, even those unable to attend in person.

Kim Jin-beom, a leader at Naver Sports, expressed enthusiasm regarding the partnership, stating, "By collaborating with KBO's 10 clubs, we are set to expand our cooperative efforts for better marketing and publicity for Korean professional baseball. Our goal is to create experiences for baseball fans that link back to the stadium atmosphere through various Naver platforms. This would enhance fan engagement and foster a greater community."

Kakao has also made headlines ahead of the 2025 pro baseball season with an upgrade to the 'Daum Sports Baseball Game Center'. By improving broadcast features, including real-time scores and graphical representations of game situations, Kakao aims to elevate the viewing experience for fans. Launching ahead of the season, these enhancements include innovative features like 'Graphic Broadcasting' and a refined 'Field View', allowing fans to follow games more dynamically.

Moved by current trends, Kakao Mobility has also launched a campaign to tackle illegal macro programs such as 'Jijiki', aimed at protecting compliant taxi drivers while addressing call distribution imbalances caused by these unauthorized applications. Moving towards stricter regulations, Kakao has warned that repeat offenders will be permanently banned from using its services. The organization appears committed to ensuring fair conditions for drivers while enhancing overall service integrity.

In another partnership, Kakao Enterprise and CNH Industrial have joined forces to develop startup ecosystems, operating the '2025 Early Startup Package' networking program aimed at emerging enterprises. This initiative seeks to not only support startups but offers networking opportunities, enhanced growth strategies, and data-sharing solutions across various data silos for business expansion.

LG Electronics is also making strides in innovation with its expanded 'LG PuriCare Aero Furniture' lineup. On March 20, the tech giant launched new models that integrate air purification capabilities into versatile, lifestyle-evolving designs. The launch includes the Aero Tower, tailored for the South Korean and Japanese markets initially, and models optimized for pet owners, showcasing the trend towards multifunctionality in consumer electronics.

Lastly, Yanolja has strengthened its relationships with big tech companies to enhance vertical AI systems for the travel industry. On March 20, the company hosted the '2025 AWS Tech Terminal & Innovation Summit', demonstrating its collaborative efforts toward building advanced AI solutions. By taking advantage of cutting-edge technologies such as Amazon Bedrock, Yanolja seeks to provide personalized travel experiences and revolutionize customer service in the sector.

This multifaceted approach highlights the competitive landscape as tech giants like Naver and Kakao focus on maximizing opportunities across various domains, from sovereign AI development to sports marketing and startup growth. With these strategic moves, the two companies are looking not only to cement their positions locally but also to expand their reach internationally and in emerging markets.
