Nature Buddies Project Aims To Connect Communities

Lottery-funded initiative launches to help people overcome barriers to nature

A network of "Nature Buddies" is set to blossom across Dorset, all thanks to a generous grant of £248,811 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. This innovative project aims to help individuals connect with the stunning natural environment of the region, offering support to those who face barriers to engaging with nature.

The initiative, led by the Dorset National Landscape team, will focus on providing specially trained volunteers known as Nature Buddies. Their role will be to assist local residents, whether through transportation to nature-based events or helping to overcome personal hurdles such as lack of confidence to explore the great outdoors.

“We are absolutely delighted to have secured this funding, thanks to National Lottery players,” expressed Phil Stirling, chair of the Dorset National Landscape Partnership. “It’s a fantastic opportunity for the team to expand our reach and demonstrate the benefits of the natural environment on health and wellbeing.”

Stirling emphasized how this grant will facilitate tangible differences within communities, allowing even more individuals to find joy and solace in nature.

Project Coordinator Jules Hammon echoed Stirling’s enthusiasm, stating, “We are excited about the prospect of setting up the Nature Buddies Network and invite those interested to register their interest.” Hammon noted their commitment to collaborating with organizations eager to train existing volunteers to become Nature Buddies.

All volunteers will receive comprehensive training and support, enabling them to make meaningful impacts within their communities and to promote connection with Dorset's rich natural surroundings.

More than just connecting people to nature, this program intends to build community spirit, as both volunteers and those seeking support interact and form bonds over their shared love for the outdoors.

The Dorset National Landscape stretches over 40% of the county and embraces diverse environments ranging from the coastal beauty of Lyme Regis to the serene landscapes surrounding Poole Harbour and the lush hills north of Blandford Forum.

This initiative is part of the broader effort by the Landscape Team, which has championed various programs since 2016. One prominent project, known as Stepping Into Nature, has successfully worked to improve wellbeing by encouraging outdoor activities and fostering connections between individuals and their environment.

Community members are encouraged to visit the Dorset National Landscape website or reach out through email at [email protected] for more information about getting involved.

By bridging gaps and cultivating relationships with nature, the Nature Buddies initiative is not just about outdoor adventures; it’s about enriching lives, enhancing mental wellness, and ensuring everyone can enjoy the breathtaking landscapes and unique ecosystems found across Dorset.

Whether you’re seeking to volunteer or simply want to connect with more of Dorset’s natural wonders, the Nature Buddies project promises to facilitate these opportunities and support individuals every step of the way.
