Nationwide Survey Uncovers Japan's Favorite Local Foods

A culinary exploration reveals unique soul food cherished across all 47 prefectures, highlighting regional identities.

Japan's culinary diversity was highlighted recently as Sony Life Insurance conducted its 2024 national survey, identifying local soul food favorites among residents across the country's 47 prefectures. The survey, which ran from October 18 to 28, included responses from 4,700 people aged 20 to 59, evenly representing each prefecture.

The results showcase unique regional dishes cherished by locals, each reflecting cultural identity and tradition.

For example, from Aomori Prefecture, respondents indicated love for miso curry milk ramen. Meanwhile, Miyagi highlighted harako meshi, and Akita saw responses for Yokote yakisoba. Each dish embodies local flavors and preparation methods, painting a portrait of Japan's rich culinary heritage.

Throughout the survey, Ibaraki stood out for stamina ramen, and Tochigi for Sano ramen. Chiba's popular dish, namehro, indicates the region's affinity for fresh fish delicacies, whilst Kanagawa introduced sanma-men, another ramen variant.

The survey doesn’t stop there; Ishikawa Prefecture revealed preferences for Hanton rice, and Fukui showcased Volga rice. Both of these dishes present exciting culinary queries for food enthusiasts, consonant with regional ingredients and tastes.

Culinary highlights continued with fuu sushi from Shiga and sobameshi from Hyogo. Meanwhile, the less-known but interesting choices from Tottori included tofu chikuwa, and Shimane presented aka-ten – indicating each region’s unique interpretations of comfort food.

The survey's breadth even extends to dishes from southern Japan, including roasted pork and egg rice as favorites from Ehime, accompanied by Turkish rice from Nagasaki and yaseuma, favored by Oita Prefecture. Each dish offers insight not only to the palate but also to the history and traditions surrounding local communities.

Miyazaki locals showed preference for hiyajiru, and Kagoshima noted torisashi, representing sizzling advancements and unique techniques, weaving tales through storytelling and cuisine.
