FGF Brands has issued a nationwide recall affecting more than two million cases of bakery products due to potential contamination with the dangerous bacterium, Listeria monocytogenes. The recall, initiated on January 7, has been designated as a Class II recall by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), raising alarms particularly for vulnerable populations including pregnant women, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.

According to the FDA's report, the recall encompasses 60 different baked goods, with notable items including 15 varieties of Dunkin’ products such as Munchkins, apple fritters, French crullers, and paczki pastries. A total of 2,017,614 cases of these grocery store offerings have been recalled, impacting both U.S. and Canadian consumers.

Dr. Robert Tauxe of the CDC emphasizes the severity of listeria, stating, “This organism causes serious and sometimes fatal infections, especially among young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.” The agency notes listeria is recognized as the third leading cause of death from foodborne illness across the United States, accounting for approximately 1,600 infections and 260 fatalities annually.

The symptoms of listeria infection can mimic food poisoning, presenting with fever, muscle aches, and nausea, which typically resolve within days. Yet for pregnant individuals, the risks are particularly grave, raising concerns over miscarriage, stillbirth, and severe infections for newborns.

FGF Brands, based out of Brownsburg, Indiana, operates with facilities across North America. The company, known for making various grocery store baked goods, stated variety and timing is key, as all affected products were produced on or before December 13, 2024.

The FDA classified this recall as Class II, meaning the use of or exposure to the violative products could lead to temporary or medically reversible health consequences, albeit with only remote probability for serious outcomes. Given the severity of the bacterium, consumers are advised to check their purchases actively.

Last month, listeria contamination was also noted during the recall of Braga Fresh’s ready-to-eat broccoli, which highlighted the pervasive issue of food safety. The FDA’s announcement serves as another reminder for consumers to monitor product use and expiration closely.
