One significant event will be held on January 20 at the First Baptist Church in Oxford, where Dr. Tony Wayne Cozart will serve as the keynote speaker at the Oxford-Granville Martin Luther King Celebration Committee’s program. The event begins at 4 p.m. and adopts the poignant theme “Make Brick Without Straw.” Cozart, who has dedicated his career to education and community service, emphasizes, “Our character is often defined by how we treat those who have no influence over us.” His illustrious resume includes over three decades of service as school administrator and community leader, reflecting the values Dr. King advocated.
Representing the collective spirit of hundreds, Marion County will also celebrate with its annual Martin Luther King Day events starting January 13. Meanwhile, the St. Cloud State University will celebrate from January 18 to 25 with activities focused on the theme “Our Beloved Community: Empowering the Dream.” The university's community program plans various family-friendly events, including planetarium shows and community conversations. Dr. Evelyn Hill will deliver the keynote address, with awards recognizing humanitarian efforts and creative expressions.
Long County, Georgia, will not be left behind as it prepares for Dr. Martin Luther King Observance Day with events throughout the week leading up to January 20. Beverly Hill, President of the Long County MLK Observance Committee, noted, “One of Dr. King’s greatest comments… is everyone can be great and you can be great by serving.” The celebrations will honor Grand Marshall Leroy Lott Sr. and promote awareness about Dr. King’s principles among younger generations.
All of these events are more than mere commemorations. They serve to remind us of the core values of service, equality, and justice inherent to Dr. King’s message. They encourage participation and reflection, allowing individuals and communities to engage with Dr. King’s legacy meaningfully. With activities set across various locales, the collective effort creates an enduring reminder of Dr. King’s vision and the importance of continuing to advocate for social justice.
