National and regional universities across Japan commenced their second entrance examination preliminary schedule on February 25, 2023, with many students braving the nerves and pressure of this pivotal moment.
This year, the preliminary exams cascaded across 18 universities within Tohoku’s six prefectures, drawing thousands of hopeful candidates from various regions. Notably, at Tohoku University’s Kawauchi North Campus, early arrivals queued outside the examination hall, poring over reference books and notes as the anxious countdown to entry began.
A student from Kanagawa expressed his feelings of nervous excitement, saying, "I am feeling nervous. My friends who are preparing together motivate me, and I hope we can all succeed together." Meanwhile, another candidate from Yamagata remarked, "I can’t wait to become a university student, so I will do my best to score as many points as I can."
Once inside the examination room, the students took their seats with serious expressions, arranging their writing instruments and watches, ready for the pivotal test starting at ten o'clock, which involved the foreign language section.
Tohoku University, which has become one of the most competitive institutions, faced 4,617 applicants for 1,630 places across ten faculties this year. This equated to a competitive ratio of 2.8, slightly higher than last year’s figure of 2.7, which indicates increasing competition for university places.
The anxiety of the examination atmosphere was palpable. Across the campus, students shared stories and offered encouragement, underscoring the camaraderie shared among those embarking on this stressful yet hopeful endeavor. With the exam behind them, the candidates now set their hopes on the results, which are scheduled to be announced on March 9, 2023. Other universities will also release results within the same timeframe.
The drive to succeed remains a powerful motivator for the students, with preparatory efforts often beginning years before, as many candidates spend their final high school years focusing on entrance exam preparations, attending tutorials, and taking practice tests to bolster their skills. The rigorous study habits combined with the pressure of testing can leave students feeling overwhelmed; schools often remind students to maintain balance, even during this highly charged period.
“It’s important not only to prepare academically but to take care of your mental health too during the preparations,” advised one high school counselor. This sentiment is echoed across educational institutions, recognizing the toll such immense pressure can take on adolescents.
Although the atmosphere surrounding the examination period can be intimidating, it also presents opportunities for students to display their commitment and aspirations, illustrating the significance of higher education as a stepping stone for future careers.
Some universities, including Tohoku University, have opted for more adaptable and accommodating testing methods due to the challenging circumstances caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. These institutions have taken measures to provide safe testing environments, including enhanced hygiene protocols and social distancing measures.
While the focus remains on academics, many students recognize the importance of holistic development, encompassing extra-curricular activities, sports, and personal interests, which can provide respite and balance against the backdrop of exam stress.
Students and educators alike are hopeful for exceptional results this year, seeing it as more than just numbers but as gateways to their futures, where dreams can take flight. Universities stand as bastions of learning and opportunities, and for many students, this exam is the gateway to achieving their academic dreams, whether it’s pursuing engineering, the sciences, or the arts.
Anticipation swells as families unite to support students, preparing celebratory gatherings regardless of outcomes, echoing the resilience and courage exhibited by these young adults. After all, the exam is just one milestone on the educational pathway.
The rich tradition of university entrance exams continues to evolve with educational changes and societal demands. Still, the cultivation of knowledge, the pursuit of excellence, and the spirit of determination endure as guiding principles for Japan's future generations.
