National Public University Entrance Exams Begin Amidst Student Anticipation

With thousands vying for limited spots, students prepare nervously for the upcoming tests across Japan.

The National Public University entrance exams will commence on the 25th, creating waves of anticipation across Japan. This pivotal event for prospective students is marked by significant preparations at various universities, as candidates gear up for their future.

At Aomori Public University, three examination venues have been established, including one on campus. Just days before the exams, staff were seen setting up, placing papers with candidate numbers on desks to facilitate organization and clarity for the examinees. With 325 applicants vying for 130 positions, the competition is fierce. Particularly at the Aomori examination site, 153 students are expected to take part.
“I believe there won’t be any issues with snow removal around the university, but some areas may struggle with road conditions due to the recent cold snap. I hope everyone allows themselves plenty of time to arrive at the exam site,” stated Yoshiyuki Ito, the Secretary of Aomori Public University.

The announcement of successful candidates from Aomori Public University is scheduled for March 7, marking the culmination of this high-pressure process for those who will take part.

Meanwhile, at Kumamoto University, the day before the exams saw students visiting the venue to familiarize themselves with the layout and important regulations. The atmosphere was tense as they prepared mentally for the challenges ahead. One anxious candidate expressed, “I hope I can utilize everything I've studied and go at the exam with confidence.” Another declared, “I absolutely want to pass!” and shared their intention to focus on their supportive family and friends as motivation. This year, Kumamoto University has received 3,342 applications against 1,179 available spots, resulting in an average admission ratio of 2.8 times.

On the other side of the country, the mood was similarly charged at Kagoshima University, where students were spotted reviewing maps and getting acclimated to their examination environment. “It feels like the exams are finally starting, which heightens the sense of gravity surrounding the situation,” remarked one student pursuing veterinary medicine. Another added, “I want to give it my all with everything I've worked for up till now.” The average admission ratio at Kagoshima University for this upcoming exam period is reported to be 3.0, with 3,524 students competing for 1,181 spots—a clear indicator of increased competition compared to previous years.

The veterinary department saw the most significant competition, exhibiting a staggering ratio of 10.1, followed closely by the dental department at 6.9 and the medical faculty at 4.3. Just like at Aomori, students at Kagoshima University can expect the results to be announced on March 7.

The National Public University entrance exams represent not just individual achievement but also the collective aspiration of students nationwide. Each examination site has become more than just venue for tests; they are places where students confront their hard work and hopes for the future against all odds. From the preparation and anticipation to the nerves and excitement, these exams encapsulate the experience and sentiment of the Japanese educational culture and its famed rigor.

With the 25th approaching, there’s no doubt students are pushing through their anxieties, some with chants of “I will pass for sure!” echoing the resolve heard from the assembly of hopeful candidates. Each student’s story is unique, yet they converge on this singular moment—one they’ve prepared for throughout their academic careers. March will mark the transition for many, whether across the mountainous terrains of Aomori or the vibrant campuses of Kumamoto and Kagoshima.
