Nation Mourns Passing Of Former Minister Syafruddin Kambo

Tributes pour in as leaders reflect on his significant contributions to Indonesia.

Former Indonesian Minister of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform, Syafruddin Kambo, has passed away at the age of 63. His demise on February 20, 2025, was reported around 18:14 WIB at RS Pusat Pertamina in South Jakarta, due to illness. The news has sent ripples of sorrow through the Indonesian public and has drawn heartfelt tributes from notable figures.

Jusuf Kalla, the former Vice President of Indonesia, expressed his deep sorrow upon learning of Syafruddin's passing. He stated, "Beliau sangat berwibawa dan selama aktif beliau melaksanakan tugas dengan sebaik-baiknya serta baik dengan siapa saja," which translates to "He was very dignified, and during his active years, he performed his duties excellently and was kind to everyone." Kalla described Syafruddin as not just an excellent politician but also as his personal aide during his vice presidency from 2004 to 2009, serving under President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

Syafruddin Kambo's contributions to the Indonesian government were significant. He held prominent positions including Vice Chief of Police and, eventually, the Minister of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform from 2018 to 2019. According to Kalla's statements, Syafruddin not only performed his governmental duties exceptionally but also took part actively and positively influenced various social and religious communities following his retirement.

After retiring, Syafruddin’s commitment to service did not wane. Kalla noted, "Setelah pensiun, beliau aktif mengurus sosial, keagamaan dan pengajian," meaning, "After retirement, he actively managed social, religious, and study events." Kalla invited the public to commemorate Syafruddin’s life with prayers, urging, "Mari kita bacakan al fatihah untuk beliau semoga husnul khatimah," translated as, "Let us recite Al-Fatihah for him, may he have a good ending." This reflection signifies the high regard held for Syafruddin within the community and government.

Throughout his career, Syafruddin also held positions such as Deputy Chief of North Sumatra Police and was appointed as the Chief of the Propam Division of the Police. His leadership as the Vice Chief of Police concluded with his announcement as Minister of PANRB under President Joko Widodo's administration. Beyond his administrative roles, Syafruddin was actively engaged with the Dewan Masjid Indonesia (DMI), reinforcing his commitment to social and religious matters alongside Kalla, who served as the Vice President and acted as the organization's chief.
