NASA Prepares NICER Telescope For Unique Spacewalk Repairs

Astronauts will conduct repairs on the NICER telescope to restore its X-ray observations after damage caused by sunlight

Navigating the vast cosmos is no easy feat, especially when instruments crucial for scientific exploration encounter unexpected damage. This has been the case for NASA's Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer, or NICER, which has been diligently studying the X-ray sky from its location on the International Space Station (ISS). In a remarkable testament to ingenuity and perseverance, NASA is now preparing to send a comprehensive repair kit to the ISS, allowing astronauts to conduct necessary repairs during an upcoming spacewalk.

The challenges facing NICER began in May 2023 when the telescope suffered a significant setback: it developed a "light leak." This unfortunate occurrence allowed unwanted sunlight to seep into the telescope, distorting crucial X-ray measurements. Without adequate intervention, this interference could compromise the high-quality data NICER has been collecting since its launch.

NICER is an impressive piece of technology. Roughly the size of a washing machine, it specializes in studying neutron stars—extreme celestial objects that are some of the densest matter known to exist. NICER's mission extends beyond just neutron stars; its observations include mysterious fast radio bursts, comet studies, and vital data related to Earth's upper atmosphere. However, the damage sustained by the telescope's thermal shields, which play a critical role in filtering sunlight, significantly impacted its ability to operate effectively during the day.

Upon inspecting NICER, engineers determined that damage to its thermal shields was localized and varied in size. The largest breach was about the size of a standard U.S. postage stamp, while other smaller damages resembled pinheads. This degradation allowed harmful sunlight to overwhelm NICER's sensitive detectors, disturbing valuable measurements during daylight hours. Interestingly, these issues did not affect observations made at night, leading to an alteration in your daytime operation strategies.

Addressing this type of damage is inherently challenging because NICER was not originally designed for servicing in space. Keith Gendreau, the principal investigator for NICER at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, noted that the telescope was installed robotically and operates remotely. Therefore, engineers had to think creatively to devise a solution using existing components within the telescope and the toolkits available on the ISS. Their solution involved the creation of specialized patches, reminiscent of pie slices, which would be fitted into the defective sunshades. These patches were engineered to hold securely in place and effectively block sunlight from infiltrating damaged areas of the thermal shields.

For the upcoming repair mission, the kit comprises 12 total patches, allowing astronauts to utilize five during the repair, with spares available if needed. The patches will be installed during a scheduled spacewalk as part of NASA's 21st commercial resupply mission by Northrop Grumman. This methodical approach not only underscores the capacity for problem-solving in the face of obstacles but also enhances the resilience and longevity of this vital scientific instrument.

One of the most exciting aspects of this repair is that it positions NICER to become the first X-ray telescope in orbit that astronauts have serviced, marking a significant milestone in space observatory operations. NICER will now join the ranks of the famed Hubble Space Telescope, which has been repaired by astronauts multiple times, pushing scientific boundaries to new heights.
