NASA Parker Solar Probe Achieves Historic Sun Encounter

The mission promises groundbreaking insights about solar phenomena and space weather dynamics.

Nobody has ventured closer to the sun than NASA’s Parker Solar Probe, which achieved historic milestones this Christmas Eve. The spacecraft made its closest approach to our star, flying within an astonishing 3.8 million miles (6.1 million km) of the sun’s surface, breaking previous records by more than seven times.

Launched on August 12, 2018, the Parker Solar Probe is on a mission to study solar phenomena, solar winds, and the impact of solar activity on space weather, which directly influences technology on Earth. Surpassing its own milestones and challenging previous attempts by manmade objects, the probe reached breathtaking speeds of up to 430,000 mph (692,000 kph) on its recent flyby, making it the fastest human-made object to date.

At the helm of this ambitious project is Nour E. Rawafi, a Tunisian astrophysicist and project scientist at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory. During the probe's daring flight, it experienced extreme conditions, deployed high-tech instruments, and utilized its cutting-edge heat shield, which allows it to withstand temperatures exceeding 2,500°F (1,300°C).
