NASA is facing significant challenges with Boeing's Starliner capsule; two astronauts are currently stranded at the International Space Station (ISS) as a result of ongoing technical issues. Originally, NASA was preparing to bring back veteran test pilots Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams after a short mission intended to take about a week. However, malfunctions in the capsule have complicated these plans, leading to an indefinite extension of their stay.
The problems came to a head after failure in the thrusters and reported helium leaks emerged during the capsule's initial docking attempt on June 6. This was Boeing's first crewed test mission since the retirement of the space shuttle program, where NASA had shifted its reliance on commercial partners like Boeing and SpaceX for the transport of astronauts. This course of action meant that astronauts were expected to rely heavily on a capsule that had not yet proven its reliability in actual crewed flights.
NASA’s Commercial Crew Program Manager, Steve Stich, noted, “We’ll come home when we’re ready.” No official return date has been set, and Stich highlighted the importance of fixing these problems before the astronauts can make their way back to Earth safely. Also, NASA has been concurrently reviewing contingency plans that potentially include the SpaceX Dragon capsule should the situation deteriorate further. The agency emphasized its standing commitment to safety and preparedness, which includes establishing backup options in light of these delays.
In the weeks leading up to the current predicament, engineers have been diligently conducting tests, including in New Mexico, to understand the thruster failures that occurred during the crucial phase of the Starliner’s approach to the ISS. Out of the five thrusters, four have been reactivated since the initial incident, but the remaining issues with both the helium leaks and degraded seals need thorough evaluation.
Further analysis showed that the thruster failures and the helium leaks are two distinct problems, which presents added complications to the crew's safe return. Boeing’s Mark Nappi indicated that engineers are committed to resolving these issues, with test-firings of the Starliner’s thrusters scheduled to occur over the weekend while it remains docked at the space station. Each of the 28 maneuvering thrusters on the capsule is relatively small, weighing in at only two pounds, yet their functionality is critical to maneuvering in space.
The situation comes on the heels of earlier setbacks for Boeing, which has faced various challenges, including a failed software demonstration during an initial un-crewed test flight back in 2019 and other complications that delayed its crewed launch until 2024. In contrast, SpaceX, a primary competitor in this commercial endeavor, has been successfully flying astronauts regularly since 2020; however, even its Falcon 9 rockets faced grounding recently due to an unrelated failure.
These ongoing issues with Boeing's Starliner capsule shed light on the complexities inherent in modern space travel, further underscoring NASA's adaptive strategies in leveraging commercial partners to fulfill its mission objectives.
