On the morning of March 16, 2025, the Crew-10 team successfully docked with the ISS at 12:05 AM EST, following their launch from Florida just two days prior. The Crew-10 mission includes four newly arrived astronauts: NASA astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's Takuya Onishi, and Russian cosmonaut Kirill Peskov. This docking marks the beginning of their responsibilities aboard the station, where they will acclimate and take over duties from the outgoing astronauts, who have been stranded since their initial launch in June 2024.

The successful docking happened amid celebrations, with Butch Wilmore opening the hatch to greet the new arrivals, ringing the ship's bell as they floated inside. “It was a wonderful day. Great to see our friends arrive,” exclaimed Sunita Williams during the greeting.

Originally launched on June 5, 2024, aboard Boeing's Starliner capsule, Williams and Wilmore's mission quickly shifted from short-term objectives to unforeseen challenges when their capsule encountered serious technical issues. This engaging dynamic was bolstered by media updates, ensuring families and the public were informed about their well-being, especially when Williams reassured the audience: “People are worried about us—really, don’t worry about us. We’re feeling good, working out, eating right. We have many fun opportunities up here.”

While their joyous reunion with Crew-10 may bring relief, both astronauts will face significant physical challenges upon their return to Earth. Prolonged exposure to the microgravity environment has led to expected complications including muscle atrophy and loss of bone density—conditions reminiscent of what former astronaut Terry Virts described as akin to dealing with the flu. Recovery will require careful rehabilitation to counteract these changes.

Health specialists note the importance of adapting back to Earth's gravity, as astronauts commonly experience what’s known as “baby feet”—a condition where newly sensitive feet struggle with the return due to the absence of calluses formed during Earth’s gravity. For Williams and Wilmore, who have been traversing the space terrain for about nine months, additional caution will be necessary to deal with disruptions to cardiovascular health and altered blood volumes upon reentry.

Another concern for astronauts returning from extended missions is the potential development of Spaceflight Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome (SANS), brought about by changes to fluid distribution within the body, potentially resulting in vision abnormalities. The astronauts' exposure to space radiation also puts them at risk for long-term health issues, including an increased risk of cancer, degenerative diseases, and other complications.

The final preparations for their return highlight not only the hard work of NASA and its partners, but also the resilience of both astronauts through their unanticipated challenges. Political discussions surrounding delays, including comments from former President Donald Trump labeling their predicament as “abandonment,” were addressed head-on by the astronauts who felt comprised nor alone during their extended stay.
