NAS Sigonella Lockdown After Security Alert

A security incident leads to temporary shelter-in-place for military personnel at the Sicilian base.

On February 26, 2025, Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella experienced a lockdown due to security concerns surrounding one of its entry points. This strategic military installation, located near Catania, Sicily, is home to around 4,000 military personnel and civilian staff, making it the only U.S. Navy air base in Europe.

The lockdown began early Wednesday morning, around 8:38 a.m., when security forces acted swiftly upon receiving reports of a potential threat—a possible vehicle-borne incendiary explosive device (VBIED). The situation prompted the base to issue immediate shelter-in-place orders to all personnel on site. An alert was communicated via social media, instigated by the Naval Air Station’s official Facebook account, advising all individuals to heed the directives of the Naval Security Forces.

Security protocols were clearly outlined for the personnel, reiterifying the need for caution as inbound and outbound traffic at NAS 2 was temporarily halted. NAS Sigonella instructed personnel to avoid using roads connecting the base to the nearby military housing complex, directing traffic to alternative gates for safety. The alert created significant concern, drawing attention on various social media platforms as members of the local community reacted to the base's announcement.

“A situation is currently underway at the entry control point of NAS 2 Sigonella. All personnel should follow the instructions of Naval Security Forces,” the base noted, emphasizing the seriousness of the alert. Throughout the lockdown period, military staff and Naval Security Forces were mobilized to investigate the potential threat efficiently.

Fortunately, at approximately 11:25 a.m., after thorough investigations, the situation was deemed secure, and the lockdown order was lifted. The comprehensive review conducted by Italian explosives disposal specialists confirmed there was no threat present. “We are grateful to our Navy Security Force personnel for their swift response,” NAS Sigonella expressed, acknowledging the hard work and professionalism exhibited during the incident.

Following the clearance, normal operations resumed, and personnel were allowed to return to their regular activities. The event raised awareness about the importance of vigilant security measures, especially within military installations. NAS Sigonella, as highlighted by LTJG Andrea Perez, remains pivotal for its logistical and operational capacity for U.S. and NATO forces across Europe and the Mediterranean.

The base’s significant location amplifies its role, ensuring effective deployment and commitment to regional security. It supports various military operations, including intelligence and reconnaissance activities utilizing Navy P-8 Poseidon aircraft and MQ-4C Triton drones.

While the incident and subsequent response highlighted the use of precautionary measures inherent to military operations, the widespread concern and social media chatter underscored how security threats can engender rapid reactions, affecting not only military personnel but also the surrounding civilian community. Nonetheless, the well-trained response from Navy Security personnel soothed anxieties as they navigated the potential crisis with efficiency and clarity.

NAS Sigonella remains committed to fostering safety and security among its personnel and the broader community, maintaining its reputation as a significant U.S. military installation abroad. Such incidents, though alarming, serve as reminders of the necessity for stringent security protocols and the unwavering diligence exercised by military and civilian staff alike.
