Naples Installs Red Zones Amid New Year Security Concerns

Authorities aim to prevent crime and respond to fire hazards during the holiday celebrations.

Naples is ramping up security measures as the city prepares to welcome the New Year, following recent incidents highlighting potential dangers. The prefect of Naples has introduced 'red zones'—designated areas identified as high-risk for crime—adding to the city's efforts to maintain safety during this festive period.

These red zones will comprise four areas within the Vomero, Chiaia, Decumani neighborhoods, and near the Garibaldi station. Effective from December 31, 2023, these security measures will remain in place for three months and could be extended if necessary. The initiative aligns with similar measures taken recently in other major Italian cities like Milan and Florence.

According to the Naples prefect, the establishment of these zones stems from concerns about public safety during crowded events. "The red zones are intended to prevent possible disturbances and crimes, particularly during significant celebrations such as New Year’s Eve," the prefect stated.

Over the past weekend, the local police undertook extensive operations across popular nightlife locations. Officers from the General Prevention Office worked alongside municipal police to conduct thorough checks, identifying 139 individuals, including 20 with criminal records, and inspecting 42 vehicles. This proactive measure reflects the city's commitment to ensuring public order during busy festivities.

Meanwhile, the city is bracing for fire incidents as well, having experienced troubling cases of urban fires linked to New Year celebrations. A significant fire broke out on Via Tribunali, prompting fears and anxiety among residents. Eyewitnesses reported flames erupting from the upper floors of the building. Firefighters quickly arrived on the scene to douse the blaze, but the cause remains undetermined. Authorities are currently investigating the possibility of fireworks being involved.

The night of December 31 is famed for its celebratory fireworks, adding another dimension to safety concerns amid increasing reports of illegal firework displays. Despite the city’s ban on firecrackers during the festivities, many citizens have already begun breaking this ordinance, prompting hospitals to go on high alert for potential casualties. Major hospitals such as Cardarelli, Pellegrini, and Ospedale del Mare have prepared their emergency services to handle any caused injuries.

Safety measures aren’t solely preventative but aim to bolster the confidence of citizens and visitors alike. The Italian Interior Minister, Matteo Piantedosi, has urged local leaders to adopt similar strategies using the so-called 'urban daspo', which allows law enforcement to ban individuals from specific public spaces for days or months if they pose threats to public order.

These heightened security protocols have been put to the test as Naples prepares for the influx of revelers expected to hit the streets on New Year’s Eve. The combination of festive spirit and security concerns presents challenges for law enforcement as they straddle the line between maintaining order and allowing citizens to celebrate the arrival of 2024.

Officials are optimistic about the effectiveness of the red zones and increased police presence, with hopes they will successfully deter crime during this period. “Our proactive strategy allows us to focus resources where they are needed most, ensuring celebrations can proceed without major disruptions,” remarked the local police chief.

Looking forward, the authorities will closely monitor the situation and evaluate the effectiveness of their strategies. With past years seeing significant improvements in handling public safety during large gatherings, the city aims to uphold its reputation as a festive yet secure destination for all.

Naples is at the heart of festive celebrations, where traditions mix with modernity, and every New Year’s Eve reflects both joy and caution amid the fireworks and festivities. The hope is this year, with these measures, citizens and visitors can ring in the New Year safely.
