The Softbank Hawks proudly introduced their latest addition, pitcher Naoyuki Uesugi, during his press conference held on December 26, 2023, at a hotel in Fukuoka. Following his previous tenure with the Nippon Ham Fighters, Uesugi reflected on the challenging choice he made to join the Hawks, stating, "It was not an easy decision for me... Time went on before I arrived at my conclusion," demonstrating the deep emotional ties he had with his former team.
Uesugi, who has previously played six seasons with the Fighters, expressed gratitude for the supportive environment they provided early on in his career. He credited them for nurturing his development as he remarked, "When I met with you several times... I was impressed by the Hawks' eagerness," acknowledging the welcoming and ambitious nature of his new team.
During the press conference, Uesugi did not shy away from discussing how long he deliberated before making the switch. "I really put deep thought on... I have to show with my performance and results," he said, emphasizing his intention to contribute meaningfully to the Hawks as they seek to attain victory. His reflection indicates a strong commitment to proving his worth as he embarks on this new chapter.
Having admired the Hawks from afar, Uesugi described his impressions of the team's capabilities during previous matchups. "I felt they were tough competitors and are quite outstanding as a team," he noted, adding to the anticipation of building camaraderie with his new teammates.
A significant influence during this transition has been the words of pitching coach Kurano, who offered insights based on his own experiences in the U.S. "When I discussed my adaptation to American baseball, Kurano encouraged me, sharing possible approaches to manage those adjustments," Uesugi explained, highlighting the Hawks' strategic vision for his development.
Uesugi's deep connections with his previous teammates, especially Kensuke Kondo, provided him additional reassurance. Although supportive, Uesugi clarified, "The decision was fundamentally mine; no matter how much I consulted others, it was not something they could decide for me."
Located within Fukuoka, Uesugi expressed excitement about the city’s vibrant culture and community, particularly noting, "I have always enjoyed the food during my visits. The whole atmosphere of Fukuoka appears to be behind the Hawks." His eagerness to immerse himself not only within the team but also the local culture adds another dimension to his move.
Regarding his jersey number selection, Uesugi stated, "Number 10 is what I like... I want it to suit me," showing his eagerness to make this number significant as he steps onto the field wearing the Hawks' colors.
With aspirations for the upcoming season already on his mind, Uesugi plans to start training early next year and is determined to prepare his body well. "First, I want to focus on strengthening my body. After returning to Japanese baseball, I need to adapt to the feeling of the ball and its movement, so I hope to spend significant time at the bullpen to get ready," he asserted.
Concluding his press conference, Uesugi expressed his ambition to be part of the Hawks' championship aspirations, saying, "During our contract negotiations, I was told the Hawks are aiming for the world championship, and I want to be part of it. I will do my best to contribute not just to winning the league but also to becoming the best team internationally." This commitment emphasizes Uesugi's readiness to blend his skills and ambition with those of his new teammates as they face the challenges of the upcoming season.
