Nakayama Kaito Shines At Japanese Figure Skation Championships

Teen Skater Surprises with Remarkable Performance Amidst National Competition

The Japanese Figure Skatings Championships commenced on December 20, 2023, at the Towa Pharmaceutical Ractab Dome located in Kadoma City, Osaka Prefecture. Among the standout performers was 16-year-old Nakayama Kaito, who stunned the crowd with his remarkable routine during the men's short program.

Nakayama, competing for the first time at the senior level, took the audience by surprise with his impressive score of 90.31 points, placing him second behind the reigning junior champion Yuma Kagiyama, who achieved 92.05 points. This performance marks Nakayama’s leap from junior ranks to serious contention at national championships, illustrating the rising talent within Japanese figure skating.

"I can't believe I scored over 90 points. The only thing on my mind was 'amazing'," Nakayama expressed after his routine, showcasing his youthful exuberance and enthusiasm. His execution included a stunning quadruple-triple jump combination, which set the tone for the rest of his performance.

His routine culminated with another successful triple axel and flawless spins and steps, all of which contributed significant component scores. Not to be overlooked, all of Nakayama’s spins and step sequences received the highest level four rating, amplifying the crowd's excitement. After concluding his performance, he couldn't resist celebrating, saying, "I did at least 10 fist pumps after my routine!" Significantly, this enthusiasm captured the essence of his achievements, adding to the atmosphere of the stadium.

Following Nakayama’s performance, the competition remained fierce as other top skaters also shone. Among them, the 37-year-old Oda Nobunari, who returned to compete after 11 years, secured fifth place, enriching the excitement of the event. The Championships are not only a prestigious event within Japan but also serve as the final selection for the upcoming World Championships set to take place next March.

For Nakayama, this competition held additional significance following his recent experiences. Just weeks prior, he faced disappointment at the Junior Grand Prix Final, where he finished third. "It was surprising for me to make it to this point and perform this way," he reflected, acknowledging the impact of previous pressures and the resolve it built within him.

His performance at these championships infused him with renewed confidence and aspirations for the future, even as age limitations prevent him from competing at the World Championships. "I'd love to perform my best routine and aim for a spot on the podium," he stated excitedly, ready to face the next challenge with vigor.

The 2023 Championships have, without question, set the stage for Nakayama Kaito, illustrating not just his technical prowess but also his potential as Japan's next rising star in figure skating. With enthusiastic fist pumps and radiant smiles, he has undoubtedly secured the hearts of many skating fans across the nation.
