Mysterious Amazon Fish Named After Literary Villain

International researchers discovered a new species with striking features, inspiring their name after Sauron from "The Lord of the Rings."

The Amazon River, a majestic expanse spanning over 4,000 miles (about 6,400 kilometers), harbors countless species, many of which remain undiscovered. Recent expeditions by international researchers have uncovered a fascinating new resident of these waters, named after a renowned literary villain, Sauron, from "The Lord of the Rings."

The new species, known as Myloplus sauron, is a type of pacu—a relative of the infamous piranha. Unlike their predatory cousins, pacus are often termed "vegetarian piranhas" due to their plant-based diet and distinctive human-like teeth. Myloplus sauron's most remarkable feature, however, is the vertical black bar on its body, resembling the fiery eye of Sauron, the malevolent entity from J.R.R. Tolkien's epic series.

This striking resemblance inspired the name and has captured the imagination of scientists and Tolkien enthusiasts alike. "Me and the co-authors thought it would be a nice idea—it really looks like Sauron's eye," said Victória Pereira, a graduate student in biology at the University of São Paulo, Brazil.

The discovery was part of a broader effort to demystify the relationships among pacus and piranhas. Pacus have long been recognized for the vertical bands on their sides, but only now have researchers been able to genetically differentiate between species. Under the leadership of Valéria N. Machado at the Universidade Federal do Amazonas, researchers conducted morphological and genetic analyses revealing three distinct species with these markings, two of which are newly identified: Myloplus aylan and Myloplus sauron.

This new fish highlights yet another example of how science and popular culture can intersect in captivating ways. The unique appearance of these species, particularly their vibrant orange-yellow patches contrasting with the black band, greatly influenced their Tolkien-inspired names.

Pacu fish, already fascinating for their diets and appearance, are now drawing attention for the potential environmental threats they face. Myloplus sauron inhabits rivers near waterfalls, settings increasingly compromised by dam construction and hydroelectric projects. The adaptation of the Xingu River flow due to the Belo Monte hydroelectric plant, for instance, poses significant risks to their natural habitats, disrupting the river’s course and, consequently, the pacus' living conditions.

"Like most rheophilic fish in this basin, M. sauron may be seriously threatened by changes in its habitat," the journal Neotropical Ichthyology noted. Researchers stress that protecting biodiversity in the Amazon is critical for maintaining the ecological balance and preserving species that are not just scientifically significant but also hold cultural and symbolic importance.

One notable aspect of scientific discoveries is the potential to draw public interest through relatable and familiar elements. By naming new species after iconic characters, scientists not only capture public attention but also underscore the importance of conservation efforts. This strategy can be a significant tool in raising awareness about lesser-known species and the environmental issues they face.

In addition to Myloplus sauron, other creatures have been named after Tolkien’s iconic villain. For instance, a tree frog, a dung beetle, and even a genus of butterflies featuring eye-like spots on their wings have drawn connections to Sauron's piercing gaze. These cross-disciplinary nods to literature broaden the appeal of scientific discoveries, opening avenues for public engagement in biodiversity conservation.

The construction of dams and other infrastructure projects in the Amazon basin is a double-edged sword. While such developments may bring economic benefits and energy resources, they often come at the cost of environmental degradation and loss of biodiversity. The delicate balance of ecosystems is easily disrupted, with long-term consequences that might not be immediately apparent. Flooding, alteration of water courses, and disruption of local habitats can lead to the decline or even extinction of endemic species.

Future efforts in environment management must consider these factors, aiming for sustainable development that protects both natural resources and the myriad species that call these environments home. The discovery of Myloplus sauron serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for responsible environmental stewardship in the face of rapid industrial expansion.

The survival of Myloplus sauron amid modern threats can be seen as a metaphor for the broader struggle against the forces that endanger our natural world. "The holotype specimen of Myloplus sauron was collected below two large waterfalls, Itamaracá and Ananinduba," said Mark Sabaj, a staff member of the Academy of Natural Sciences at Drexel University. "The holotype is the most important specimen because it is the only one to officially represent the species name and is thereby considered the ‘original'." This lone example not only defines the species but also serves as a call to action for conservation efforts to preserve these unique inhabitants of our world's most diverse ecosystems.
