Myriam Sylla, born in Palermo to Ivorian parents, has become one of Italy's most prominent volleyball players. Throughout her career, she has not only excelled on the court but has also showcased immense personal strength and resilience, especially after facing challenges and injuries.
Growing up, Myriam’s family relocated to Lombardy for work when she was still very young. This move marked the beginning of her volleyball career, as she joined local youth teams and quickly demonstrated her natural talent. With her hard work and determination, she ascended to Italy's Serie A1 league, where she achieved remarkable success. Her resolve is evident through her motto, "Finché mi batte il cuore, finché mi reggono le gambe," which translates to, "While my heart beats and my legs hold up," reflecting her relentless spirit.
Sylla’s passion for sports developed early. Interestingly, she initially pursued dance, even joining ballet classes, before truly discovering her calling on the volleyball court. She recalled, "I did classical dance, and I liked it very much. My parents took me to lessons," indicating how encouragement from her family steered her toward her ultimate passion.
Supported by her family, who emphasized the importance of education alongside sport, Sylla has always balanced her athletic commitments with her academic responsibilities. She has shared, “My family always motivated me to try and respected all my choices,” which highlights the foundation they provided during her formative years.
Her parents were instrumental during her rise, having always encouraged Myriam to follow her aspirations without hindering her potential. Essential support systems emerged when her family settled close to Palermo. There, they met Alida and Paolo Genduso, owners of a bar who became surrogate grandparents to Myriam. The Gendusos were particularly influential, caring for Myriam during her childhood. Paolo recalled, "She always traveled alone to come see us. She spent the whole summer with us, and since she was little, she’s been very affectionate." This bond remained strong even as her volleyball career blossomed, and the Gendusos continue to cheer her on today, rarely missing her games.
Despite the joys of her life off the court, Sylla's path has not been free of pain. Like many athletes, she has faced injuries, which could have derailed her career. Instead, they only seemed to strengthen her resolve. Along with her sporting achievements, her emotional narratives strike deep chords, exemplified by her heartbreaking experience of losing her mother, whom she promised to honor with Olympic success.
Sylla's relationship with the sport goes beyond competitiveness; it has become part of her identity. She continues to thrive, using her public platform to inspire others, advocating for resilience and strength. Ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, she described her rigorous training regime and dietary commitments, saying, "I try to give my body what it needs. A classic plate of pasta, followed by meat, fish, or mozzarella." This insight conveys the level of dedication required to perform at elite athlete standards.
Myriam Sylla is not only known for her talents but also her ability to maintain balance. She enjoys life and gives herself permission to savor treats like gelato or rich pasta dishes as long as they do not compromise her performance. This refreshing honesty about managing health and indulgence resonates particularly well with fans, as it shows she is relatable yet dedicated to her craft.
Off the court, Sylla has found love with fellow athlete Alessandro Cappelletti, a professional basketball player for the Dinamo Sassari. Their relationship, which blossomed gradually after they met during overlapping sporting events, exemplifies mutual respect and support born from their shared commitment to athletics. Alessandro shared with “La Nuova Sardegna” how their schedules sometimes create challenges but also strengthen their bond: “Being athletes, we are aware of our commitments. There are times when we see each other less, but it ends up reinforcing our bond.”
The couple has taken significant steps together, including buying a home together in Spoleto, which adds another dimension to their loving relationship. Sylla remarked, “It is important to have our own space where we can be together during breaks from our demanding schedules.” They dream of building on their life together and potentially starting a family, though they plan to take their time.
Over the years, Myriam Sylla has proven to be more than just capable of winning games; she inspires girls and young women not just to excel athletically but also to embrace their unique journeys. Her personal story deeply connects her to her roots and showcases the importance of community support, perseverance, and hard work.
Myriam continues to compete and left her indelible mark on volleyball as she gears up for the Olympic Games. Her path teaches us about resilience, the value of keeping close ties to loved ones, and the impact of pursuing one’s passions with unwavering determination.
