Myanmar Sees Significant Growth In Rice Exports

The country exported over 2.37 million tons of rice, earning $1.09 billion during the last 11 months.

The Myanmar Rice Federation has reported significant achievements for the country’s rice exports, indicating strong performance over the last eleven months of the fiscal year 2024-2025. From April 2024 to February 2025, Myanmar exported rice and broken rice totaling over 2.37 million tons, with revenues reaching approximately $1.09 billion.

According to the federation, the month of February alone saw over 129,452 tons of rice exported. This increase indicates consistent growth within the agricultural sector, especially within the rice industry, which is pivotal for Myanmar's economy.

During the reporting period, rice exports were sent to over thirty countries across various trade routes, including maritime and overland paths. The main destinations included neighboring countries and various markets across Asia where demand for rice remains high.

For comparison, during the previous fiscal year 2023-2024, Myanmar exported 1.6 million tons of rice, generating revenues over $845 million. This signifies approximately a 48% increase both in volume and revenue from the previous year’s performance, showcasing the growing strength and importance of Myanmar’s rice sector on the global market.

Industry experts attribute this growth to enhanced production techniques and improved supply chain efficiency, which have allowed Myanmar's farmers to meet international demand more competitively. The Myanmar government has also been supporting agricultural exports through various initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure and market access.

Despite the challenges faced due to seasonal and climatic fluctuations, Myanmar has remained resilient. The rice federation has been at the forefront, offering guidance and support to farmers to boost productivity and quality.

"The increase in rice exports is not just about numbers; it reflects the hard work and dedication of our farmers," commented industry officials. They noted the importance of sustainable practices and innovation to sustain this growth.

The rise of Myanmar as a key player in the rice market plays an important role not only economically but also socially. Rice farming employs millions, providing livelihoods and sustenance to households across rural areas. Balancing exports with food security is continuously emphasized by agricultural experts to keep domestic markets supplied and stable.

Looking forward, the federation aims to expand its reach and explore new markets, particularly focusing on regions experiencing rapid growth. This strategy could potentially lead to even higher export volumes and revenue streams, reinforcing Myanmar's status within the global agricultural community.
