MVD Warns Of Fake Wi-Fi Networks Stealing Telegram Accounts

Cyber criminals are using deceptive networks to access personal data of users.

Cybercriminals are ingeniously exploiting fake Wi-Fi networks to target unsuspecting Telegram users, according to recent warnings issued by the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD) of Russia. Authorities have reported numerous incidents where these fraudulent networks have been established, particularly in public spaces, posing serious risks for users who may think they are logging onto legitimate internet connections.

One notable example surfaced at Sheremetyevo Airport, where a deceitful access point named SVO_Free was identified. "Злоумышленники создали фальшивые сети, которые внешне выглядят как реальные," noted officials from the MVD, emphasizing the sophistication of these cyber schemes. Users who connect to such networks are often tricked during the authentication stage, directed to provide sensitive information not through traditional methods like SMS login codes to websites but via Telegram.

How does this scheme work? Upon connecting to the rogue Wi-Fi, users are prompted to authenticate by sending their SMS code to a Telegram bot instead of going through the regular process. This unique twist allows scammers direct access to users' Telegram accounts, effectively compromising personal information and conversations. Sheremetyevo officials have stressed the importance of awareness, stating, "Официальная сеть не запрашивает персональные данные пользователя, а также не просит подключиться через мессенджеры, 'Госуслуги' и др." They advise using only their recognized network, _Sheremetyevo Wi-Fi, to avoid falling victim to such fraud.

This rise of malicious Wi-Fi networks doesn’t end at airports. Fraudsters have taken to distributing deceptive QR codes claiming entry to community chats, which unsuspecting residents have scanned without realizing they were making their accounts vulnerable. The Ministry has been encouraging the public to remain vigilant against these tactics, especially as reports of such scams have intensified.

Earlier this year, fraudulent schemes had also emerged where criminals convinced victims to convert rubles to precious metals like gold with promises of greater security. "Мошенники убеждают россиян конвертировать рубли в золото," highlighted Ura.ru, detailing another layer of deception previously noted by authorities. The intersection of these scams reflects how diverse and adaptive cybercriminals have become.

Adding to concerns, Deputy Anton Nemkin has flagged this new methodology, describing it as "опасной и манипулятивной," following the MVD’s warning. The use of virtual identities, especially through seemingly official applications, can lead to unauthorized access to banking data and other sensitive information.

Victims should be particularly cautious when connecting to public networks, keeping an eye out for unusual prompts requiring Telegram authentication. The best defense remains awareness; being informed on how these scams operate could avoid the missteps leading to compromised accounts.

To summarize, as cybercriminals develop more sophisticated methods to exploit unsuspecting individuals, including through fake Wi-Fi networks and deceptive QR codes, staying alert and informed is key to safeguarding personal information.
