His alignment with former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro and vocal criticism of the left-leaning government have turned the case not just about social media regulations but also about broader ideological disputes between the right and left across the globe. Musk called out Moraes on social media, labeling him as “the dictator of Brazil” and dismissing his authority.
Interestingly, the court has taken precautionary measures, including imposing penalties of up to 50,000 reais ($6,760) per day for non-compliance with the ruling. Experts argue this creates uncomfortable territories; is Brazil engaging in censorship, or is it simply enforcing laws? His satellite internet service, Starlink, also informed Brazil's telecommunications regulator of its refusal to comply with the ban. This position may open Starlink up to additional regulatory scrutiny, particularly since the service is pivotal for numerous remote regions across the Brazilian Amazon.
