Musk Orders Federal Workers To Justify Work Or Risk Termination

Confusion and concern rise as Elon Musk's email demands accountability from federal employees amid wide-ranging layoffs.

Elon Musk, at the helm of the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has sparked significant concern among federal employees due to his recent email directive demanding they account for their weekly accomplishments. This order, which threatens termination for non-compliance, is seen as part of a broader initiative to fundamentally reshape and reduce the federal workforce.

The email was sent on Saturday to employees across multiple departments, including the FBI, State Department, and Environmental Protection Agency, instructing them to provide five bullet points detailing what they achieved during the previous week. The responses were required by Monday at midnight, but the email did not mention any consequences for failing to respond. Musk, who promoted this email on his social media platform X, stated, "All federal employees will shortly receive... Failure to respond will be taken as a resignation."

This remark has been met with widespread backlash. Everett Kelley, president of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), condemned the measure, labeling it "cruel and disrespectful" to federal workers, particularly veterans, who are now being forced to justify their employment to Musk, described as "an out-of-touch, privileged, unelected billionaire who has never performed one single hour of honest public service." The union expressed their intent to challenge any unlawful terminations arising from these demands.

Doreen Greenwald, president of the National Treasury Employees Union, echoed these sentiments, branding Musk's approach as "un-American" and vowing to stand firm against what she perceives as threats to civil service integrity. Similarly, issues surrounding Musk's lack of demonstrable authority over these federal employees have also emerged, leaving many federal workers uncertain about the directives they have received.

Adding to the confusion, various federal agencies, including the FBI and the State Department, advised employees to ignore Musk's requests. Newly appointed FBI Director Kash Patel communicated to agency employees to "pause any responses" to the OPM directive, standing firm on the principle of respecting established internal review processes. The State Department also reinforced this guidance, assuring staff they would respond on behalf of employees.

Despite the concerns voiced by labor leaders and agency officials, Musk maintained his stance on social media, stating the task of summarizing work accomplishments should only require about five minutes. "An email with some bullet points... should take less than 5 mins to write," he asserted, downplaying the labor-intensive nature of bureaucratic reporting.

The contentious nature of this situation reflects broader political shifts under President Trump, who has pushed privatization and downsizing within the federal workforce. Just days prior, Trump encouraged Musk via his own platform to adopt more aggressive tactics against government waste and inefficiency, pushing for significant reductions among federal ranks. Trump expressed, "Elon is doing a great job... but I would like to see him be more aggressive," underlining the administration's commitment to trimming federal services.

Since Musk's appointment, thousands of federal employees have faced layoffs, raising alarms about the stability of federal services and the potential fallout on local economies. The Trump administration's aggressive budget cuts and downsizing initiatives have painted an unsettling picture of the government workforce. Legal experts are questioning the basis for Musk’s authority to issue such compliance mandates, with suggestions pointing toward potential intimidation tactics to undermine staff morale.

During this transitional phase, many federal employees are weighing their options as they navigate this uncertain environment, with reports of staff expressing feelings of being terrorized. One federal employee described the atmosphere as instilling fear, stating, "I was shocked by the message... it left me with a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach."

The chaotic environment at federal agencies coupled with Musk's harsh management strategies mirrors earlier approaches from his tenure at Twitter, where he utilized similar methods to enforce discipline and accountability. Post-acquisition, Musk required detailed reports on employees' work—a tactic now replicated within the federal sphere.

With these developments continuing to unravel, union officials have advised workers to seek guidance from supervisors and remain vigilant about the ambiguous directives laid out by Musk. The repercussions of these policies may continue to resonate long after the immediate responses are collated.

Nevertheless, the White House has yet to respond to inquiries about the email's authenticity and Musk's authority. The tension generated by Musk's demands exemplifies the complex and often fraught intersection of private management strategies and public service accountability.

While Musk has remarked on his objectives being consistent with President Trump's vision, many federal employees are left grappling with the aftermath of his policies, questioning both their jobs and the value of their contributions to public service.
