Musical Starter For Ten Returns To Stage This Fall

Fans are thrilled as the beloved 80s-themed musical embarks on its second run.

Buzzers at the ready! The hit musical Starter for Ten, inspired by the beloved British quiz show University Challenge, is returning to the Bristol Old Vic this fall after its triumphant world premiere earlier this year. The show will run from September 10 to October 11, 2025, before heading to Birmingham Rep Theatre for two weeks, from October 22 to November 1, 2025.

Set against the vibrant backdrop of the 1980s, Starter for Ten tells the coming-of-age story of Brian, who embarks on his first year at Bristol University eager to fulfill his lifelong dream of competing on the BBC quiz show. Based on the novel by David Nicholls and its film adaptation released in 2006, which starred actors like James McAvoy, Benedict Cumberbatch, James Corden, and Rebecca Hall, the production captures the spirit of youth and ambition.

Mel Giedroyc, known for her role as the witty and supportive Irene Jackson, Brian’s mother, is set to reprise her role, alongside characters played by Bamber Gascoigne’s sidekick Julia Bland. Giedroyc expressed her excitement about the return, stating, “Our first run in Bristol was glorious—the audiences, the energy, the sheer joy—and to be returning to Bristol Old Vic feels like coming home (again). And then, to be taking it to Birmingham as well? Let’s crack open the Babycham immediately, please!”

The book and lyrics for the musical are co-written by Emma Hall and Charlie Parham, who also serves as the director. They have crafted a lively script filled with humor, romance, and poignant moments reflecting the challenges faced by students. The score and lyrics have been composed by queer pop-punk composers Tom Rasmussen and Hatty Carman, contributing to the show’s energetic and nostalgic feel.

Reflecting on the 80s-inspired soundtrack, Giedroyc added, “We’re bringing back the nail-biting competition, the romance, the wild 80s-inspired original soundtrack... I am genuinely so proud of our show and cannot wait for even more people to see it!” The music is poised to evoke memories of the decade, encouraging audiences to engage with the era’s fun and iconic social culture.

The production is set to resonate deeply with fans of the original film and new audience members alike, thanks to its relatable themes of competition, young love, and social class. Audiences can expect not only emotional highs and lows but also plenty of laughter and nostalgia throughout the performances.

Before its initial run, the musical received rave reviews, with critics praising its joyful narrative, clever humor, and authentic portrayal of university life. One reviewer from WhatsOnStage called it “a showstopper musical full of joy, comedy, and 80s nostalgia,” highlighting its heartfelt connection with viewers.

Fans are eagerly awaiting the return of Starter for Ten, which promises to deliver another round of excitement and entertainment. The highly anticipated performances at the Bristol Old Vic and Birmingham Rep Theatre are set to showcase not only the talents of the actors involved but also the collaborative creative process behind the scenes.

Tickets for the Bristol and Birmingham performances are now available, and theatre lovers are encouraged to secure their seats soon. With its heartwarming storyline, memorable characters, and catchy music, Starter for Ten is not just a musical; it's a celebration of youth, dreams, and the delightful chaos of university life.
