Murder Investigation Underway After Boxing Day Death

Police arrest three suspects as community mourns man's tragic loss during the festive season.

A murder investigation has been launched following the tragic death of a 50-year-old man on Boxing Day in Newtownards, County Down.

Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) reported receiving emergency calls just before 1:50am on December 26, 2024, about an unconscious man at residential premises located on West Street. Despite being rushed to the hospital, the man could not be saved and was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Two women, aged 58 and 33, were arrested at the scene, and later, a 36-year-old man was detained at another address nearby. All three have been arrested on suspicion of murder and are currently being held for questioning.

Detective Chief Inspector Anthony Kelly, who is overseeing the investigation, expressed the gravity of the situation, emphasizing, "It's particularly shocking this should happen at Christmas and we know the thoughts of our community will be with this man's family and friends today."

Kelly provided details confirming the nature of the investigation remains at an early stage with police actively seeking to establish the circumstances surrounding the man’s death. He reassured the public, stating, "Cordons remain in place and local residents will see a visible police presence in the area.”

Community leaders have echoed sentiments of shock and sympathy. Jim Shannon, MP, shared his condolences with the man's family, stating, “A man is dead and his loved ones grieve. The family focus on their loss and not on Christmas. Our thoughts are with them at this time.” Shannon's poignant remarks illustrated the sadness felt by many during what is typically a festive season.

The police have appealed to anyone with information related to the incident to come forward. Individuals can reach out by contacting the PSNI at 101 and quoting reference number 98 from the date of the incident. Alternatively, they can provide information anonymously via Crimestoppers, which is accessible at 0800 555 111 or through their website.

A post-mortem examination is expected to be scheduled, which may shed more light on the circumstances leading to this tragic event. Meanwhile, the investigation continues, with officers working diligently to gather evidence and interviews from potential witnesses.

The community of Newtownards, now grappling with the tragedy, seeks answers and closure. The police insist on their commitment to unravel the facts surrounding this case, which strikes at the heart of what it means to lose life during the festive period.

Updates will follow as the investigation progresses, and authorities urge anyone who may have relevant information to assist them during this challenging time.
