Mumbai's local train services on the Central Railway's main line experienced significant disruptions early Tuesday morning, frustrating thousands of commuters reliant on this key transport link. The delays were attributed to a technical snag identified within the signalling system, causing trains to fall behind schedule by roughly 15 to 20 minutes during one of the busiest travel times of the day.
According to reports, the problems arose around 4:55 AM on the south-bound slow track between Diva and Mumbra railway stations, located within the neighbouring Thane district. Swapnil Nila, the Central Railway's Chief Public Relations Officer, noted the situation was finally rectified by approximately 6:00 AM, but not before the delays had made their impact felt on the already busy suburban networks.
Officials reported multiple trains were delayed during the morning rush hours due to the signal glitch, which heavily strained the capacity of the Central Railway's already congested services. This disruption, occurring at the height of peak travel times, necessitated increased passenger waits and prompted discomfort among commuters, highlighting how dependent many are on this suburban railway.
"Due to the disruption, crowds swelled on the Central Railway's suburban trains and stations along the main line," Nila stated, illustrating the rush hour pressure felt particularly acutely by those attempting to navigate their commute during the delays. Challenges faced by commuters included overcrowded platforms, longer waiting times, and the general stress associated with unpredictability during morning travels.
The Central Railway runs nearly 1,800 local services daily, catering to over 35 lakh (3.5 million) passengers on its main, harbour, trans-harbour, and Belapur-Uran corridors. This vast network is often considered the lifeline of Mumbai, making it exceptionally important to maintain operational reliability.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared insights about future plans to address such issues. Speaking of the wider strategy for Mumbai's suburban railway network, the Minister noted enhancements aimed at both passenger convenience and operational efficiency. He promised the introduction of new-design trains equipped with advanced features to improve overall comfort, alongside plans to gradually reduce the time gap between local train services.
Currently, trains are scheduled to arrive every 180 seconds, but Vaishnaw indicated efforts could bring this timing down to 150 seconds, and eventually to 120 seconds. This frequency increase could vastly alleviate overcrowding, making daily commutes significantly easier for the millions of people who use these services.
"A plan for new-design trains on the Mumbai suburban network will be announced soon," the Minister assured, which augurs well considering the obstacles faced by commuters on Tuesday morning. The discussions also included plans for increasing the overall number of local train services, with goals set to add around 300 additional services phased once current infrastructure projects are completed.
The expected increase would raise the total number of daily services to approximately 3,300, which could greatly improve the current travel experience for millions. Augmenting services and enhancing infrastructure is seen as a necessary step to align with the city's growing population and burgeoning commuter needs.
