Mpox Outbreak Declared Emergency As Cases Surge

The Congo battles rising mpox cases and seeks urgent vaccine support amid mounting fatalities

KINSHASA, Aug 20 — The mpox outbreak, once more known as monkeypox, has recently been declared a "continental emergency" by the Health Minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Samuel-Roger Kamba. The declaration underlines the severity of the situation as the country battles rising infection rates and death tolls.

Since the start of 2024, the DRC has documented 16,700 confirmed or suspected cases of mpox, along with reports of over 570 deaths. This is up from the previous week's count of 15,664 suspected cases and 548 deaths, showcasing the rapidly growing crisis.

The roots of the current outbreak can be traced back to December 2022 when the DRC declared it as a national emergency. An incident management system was established by the government early the following year to strategically respond to the climbing number of cases.

This latest surge has affected 17 countries across Africa and has also made its way to several regions globally. Notably, Kamba pointed out concerning trends of the disease hitting younger demographics, particularly children under 15, which he described as "novel" within the outbreak's history.

Vaccines remain in the spotlight as the Health Minister reiterated their significance, stating, "I remind you the vaccine is only part of the response; the first line of defence is adherence to preventive measures." DRC is set to receive its first batch of vaccines next week, signaling hope for containment efforts.

Government interventions have aimed at curbing the spread of the disease, with some success noted. These measures have reportedly prevented what could have been larger outbreaks within the country.

On August 14, the World Health Organization (WHO) escalated the situation by classifying mpox as a public health emergency of international concern. This decision reflects growing worries over the potential for widespread transmission, leading to increased vigilance from health authorities globally.

The WHO's announcement followed assessments from the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They highlighted the outbreak’s expansive nature, prompting designations of urgent attention from health policymakers.

Recent statistics from the African Union's health agency reveal alarming increases, with new mpox cases reported this year showing a 160 percent rise compared to the same time frame last year. This spike paints a stark picture of the current public health crisis.

Compounding these challenges is the emergence of Clade 1b, a new variant of the virus with heightened lethality. The mortality rate for this strain is estimated at 3.6%, presenting considerably higher risks than earlier variants.

Health experts continue to urge the public and health systems to take precautionary measures. Kamba emphasized the importance of public compliance with health directives as the vaccine rollout approaches.

With 96 percent of reported mpox cases concentrated within the DRC, it's clear the country bears the brunt of the outbreak. The government has ambitious plans to vaccinate approximately four million people, with 3.5 million doses earmarked for children.

Many are watching with bated breath as Africa waits for the necessary vaccines to arrive. Last week, the global health community expressed urgency for swift vaccination programs to mitigate the crisis.

The WHO has urged countries to investigate new cases thoroughly, aiming to understand how the virus spreads and prevent wider outbreaks. They have also called for global cooperation to track cases and manage suspected infections effectively.

Alongside these calls for vigilance and collaboration, both the United States and Japan have pledged vaccine donations to the DRC. The U.S. has committed to sending 50,000 doses, whereas Japan has offered 3.5 million doses, focusing predominantly on the vulnerable children.

Health officials remain hopeful, yet realistic about the road ahead. With the mounting pressures from the mpox outbreak, constant monitoring, community engagement, and vaccination efforts will be pivotal to controlling the situation.

Continued frontline efforts are deemed necessary, reflecting on past health crises and the adaptability of health systems. This moment serves as both a call to action and grim reminder of the persistent threat infectious diseases pose.

For now, the world watches closely as the DRC navigates this urgent health challenge.
