Movistar Plus+, one of Spain's leading television platforms, is set for substantial changes starting January 1, 2025. These alterations are crafted to attract new subscribers and improve the viewing experience for existing ones.
The most notable shift involves the removal of 14 channels previously provided by AMC Networks. Channels like Canal Cocina, Canal Historia, Sundance TV, and more will no longer be available to Movistar Plus+ users, resulting from the termination of commercial agreements between the companies. "Hemos vivido momentos inolvidables juntos. Ahora Movistar ha decidido quitar a sus abonados Canal Cocina," is how AMC summarized the impact of losing these channels.
Conversely, to counterbalance this significant decrease, Movistar has signed deals to introduce four new channels from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). Starting January 2025, viewers will gain access to BBC History, BBC Home, BBC Food, and BBC Top Gear. These channels promise diverse programming—ranging from documentaries to cooking shows and automotive content—aimed at enriching the viewing experience. "Los usuarios ya saben lo que les espera este año. Una televisión más diversa, con opciones para todos los gustos," expressed Movistar officials about the upcoming changes.
Movistar has also announced the successful addition of two free sports channels: Eurosport 4K and Supercopa por M+. Eurosport 4K, launching January 9, 2025, will provide coverage of the Australian Open, broadcasting events until January 28, 2025, with high-quality Ultra HD visuals. Meanwhile, the temporary channel Supercopa por M+ will showcase matches from the Supercopa de España starting January 8 through January 13, 2025. This channel will allow viewers to follow competitions without extra costs, as it will occupy the dial previously held by Copa del Rey por M+ during the tournament.
Beyond channel changes, Movistar Plus+ has also refined its pricing structure. Adjustments to subscription fees will take effect from January 13, 2025, with increases around 5%. Prices for fiber and mobile packages will also shift, as the company aims to bolster its network infrastructure. Movistar justified these increases by emphasizing their goal of enhancing service quality, including upgrades to fiber optic and future-proofing technology.
The changes at Movistar Plus+ have received mixed reactions from its subscriber base. While some view the removal of AMC’s channels as disappointing, the prospect of new quality content from BBC is seen as actively beneficial. The strategic shifts by Movistar reflect broader trends across the pay television market, where competition is fierce, and customer satisfaction is key.
With these updates looming, viewers are encouraged to evaluate their subscriptions and available streaming options, considering both the newly added channels and other alternatives for market content. Movistar is optimistic these changes will lead to broader viewer engagement and satisfaction, offering programming to suit all preferences.
